Going from bad to worse, the situation today further deteriorated across the region as angry protestors openly defied curfew restrictions to continue protests, demonstrations and vandalism of public property. Rapid Action Force had to be deployed in some sensitive areas of the western parts of city where more than a 1000 strong mob outnumbered the cops. More than 100 people have been reported injured, with six of them critically, and around six dozen protesters and their leaders have been taken into custody for inciting communal passions. Reports of communal attacks too have been received from areas like Kathua, Bari Brahmna, Samba, Akhnoor and Rajouri. The BJP today made a fervent plea to its cadres and supporters not to harm the members of the minority community but still Gujjars were being targeted in several areas. Meanwhile, the ongoing shut down and demonstrations have been extended by another period of three days. A decision to this effect was taken by the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti –an all party organization spearheading the ongoing agitation in Jammu region. “We have extended the bandh and protest by 72 hours”, said a spokesman of the Samiti. Bharatiya Janta Party has also extended its support to the Jammu bandh call intensifying its agitation in Jammu region against the state government’s decision to revoke the land transfer order.
Addressing a press conference State BJP Chief Ashok Khajuria on Thursday said that the ongoing agitation would continue till minority government headed by Ghulam Nabi Azad was not dismissed and also demanded cancellation of the land transfer order. Meanwhile, on ground the law and order situation continues to be tense as protesters defied curfew at several places cross Jammu and clashed with police. Over 30 people were injured in incidents of stone pelting and lathi charge at several places in Jammu. The protesters pelted stones and clashed with police force demanding revocation of controversial land transfer order at Bantalab,Gaddigrh,Muthi.Reports of violent clashes in Kathua and Samba were reported as large mob atatcked sales tax office and damanged vehicles. A police vehicle was torched in Bantalab area in Jammu and a house of Hurriyat leader Comrade DR Sharma was attacked by activists of Hindu Shiv Sena in Nanak Nagar area when he was addressing media conference. Shiv Sena activists ransacked house of the Hurriyat leader and damaged house furniture before manhandling him. Meanwhile, an angry mob including large number of women came out on the streets in Gadigarh area in Jammu and burnt tyres in the middle of the road and demanded dismissal of the Congress Chief Minister GhulamNabi Azad. In Kathua angry mob attacked office of t he deputy commissioner and pelted stones on the office building and damaged vehicles parked in the office premises. More than 70 protesters were arrested by police when they were attempting to disrupt rail traffic on Jammu Jallandhar section. Road blockages on Jammu Pathankot highway were raised at several places by protesters.Effigies of PDP patron Mufti Mohd Sayeed and PDP Chief Mehboba Mufti and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was burnt by agitators. Chief secretary and DGP police convened a high level meetiung here at circuit house. BJP leaders and chief of Amarnath sangarsh Samiti also attedned the meeting. The state government officials urged the political leaders to maintain communal harmony. The BJP leaders gave an assurance to senior officers that an every effort was being made to pacify the agitators and assured that BJP would never disturb communal harmony. |
