| Azad ignores "Devtas" inhabiting Jammu | | | Gareeb Dass Jammu | July 4 Chief Minister,Ghula Nabi Azad, seems to be upset over the way people in Jammu resorted to unprecedented violence in protest against the revocation of the land order.Since he had the impression that the Jammuites are "Devtas",as he described them during his press conference on Thursday,he had never imagined that they could set Jammu on fire.He had expected only Kashmiris to resort to violence. He had learnt from experience that Kashmiris take to the streets while giving vent to their anger. And this time the Jammuites set a new record by responding fully to the 144-hour Bandh call. They exhibited their energy and vigour for clashing with the gun and lathi weilding policemen. Possibly Azad had not expected people in Jammu to react so angrily that the Congress leaders, including ministers and legislators, preferred to remain indoors to giving sermons to people.Azad had presumed that since people in Jammu were "Devtas"they would not react hard to the land revocation order. He had simply expected that Kashmiris have the stamina to set the river Jehlum on fire and thought it prudent to concede their demand.Azad is not totally wrong in his assessment.People living in Jamu are men from the "Devlok" as they have accepted refugees from Pakistan and occupied Kashmir with open arms during the last 60 years. They have welcomed internally displaced people whether from Kashmir or from Poonch,Doda and Rajouri. The Chef Minster has a sharp memory. He knows that people in Jammu have never created a situation in which other communities and ethnic groups were forced to flee their places of birth. They have never attacked pilgrims to Mata Vaishnov Devi and Amarnath shrine. They have never asked skilled and unsklled labourers from Bihar and other states to quit Jammu. This very "Devta" type attitude had encouraged Azad to ignore the demand,, sentiments and aspirations of people of Jammu. He shut his eyes to the breast beating and anger of the Jammuites and succumbed to pressure having been mounted on him by the valley centric political leaders and people in Kashmir. He knows it well that Kashmiris have stronger lung power for raising slogans than the Jammuites. He possibly was mistaken when he thought that people in Kashmir have stronger sinews than those in Jammu for torching Government buildings and police vehicles and for resisting any aggression on their culture, religion and reason..He has one more fear.He knows that Kashmiri politicians shout loud whenever they feel people in the valey facing any problem. It is not the case in Jammu where political leaders remain mum when people fume and fret under prolonged power shutdowns and over insufficient drinking water supply.People in Jammu have had to bear severe odds during the current hot and humid season because of prolonged power shutdown. For the last three months they are faced with regular power and water disruption but not a single political leader has dared to raise his voice. It is so because VIPs,including ministers, legislators and senior bureaucrats, had no knowledge about the problem the Gladini grid station created because of damage to its transformers. They were ignorant of the 10 to 12 hour power shutdown because they were fed with electricity through special power transmission lines.Chief Minister's official residence in Jammu has more than two power supply lines and a power backup. It was but natural for him to ignore the problem instead of ordering renovation and repair work in double or triple shifts. For several weeks people in Jammu have and are passing sleepless nights because of power shutdown but for the VIPs it has been undisturbed sleep and dreams. And Azad does not know that for even "Devtas" there is a limit to patience. The revocation of the land order washed away the gates of patience by the flood of anger and insult of peopleAnd this anger could either flood Jammu or set the river Chenab on fire if the power supply system was not improved. You canot expect "Devtas" inhabiting Jammu to stick to their philosophy "pain is the fact of life." |
