Jammu | July 4
In his firefighting efforts to restore peace in Jammu region which is under a raging fire on the issue of Amarnath Shrine land controversy, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today spoke to leaders of all those parties which did not attend his all-party meeting for a collective effort on maintaining law and order.
The Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad sought cooperation of various political parties in normalising situation and maintaining communal harmony in Jammu division even as he called a meeting of his party ministers, legislators and corporators asking them to fan out in different parts of the province to undo the propaganda unleashed by vested interests to divide people on religion and region.
Azad today talked on phone with Presidents of Bharatiya Janata Party, National Conference, Panthers Party, Samajwadi Party,Bahujan Samaj Party and Shiv Sena and General Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation and expressed his desire for a collective effort by all political parties to maintain law and order and communal harmony in Jammu province.
The Chief Minister spoke separately with these leaders and urged them to activate their party cadres and ask them to work for maintaining law and order and traditional communal amity throughout Jammu division. He also met some of these leaders and expressed his desire to meet others also to defuse the situation and bring normalcy in the province.
Earlier, the Chief Minister called a meeting of ministers, legislators, corporators and other workers of the Congress party here and asked them to reach out to people in different parts of the province and dispel the misgivings created by some vested interests over the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) land issue. Disinformation campaign on this issue was launched by these elements with an eye on coming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, adding it needed to be countered by making public aware of the factual position.
The Chief Minister said that people need to be informed about the fact that the withdrawal of the government order followed the communication received from the SASB informing the government that the Board would not pursue its request for diversion of the forest land if the government was ready to provide all facilities and security to the yatries during the entire yatra period. He said the government accepted this responsibility as it felt that it was capable enough to provide the facilities asked for in the SASB letter.
The Chief Minister said that the government was already providing logistic support to the yatra in the shape of healthcare, security, etc. He said the government could create all the required facilities for the smooth conduct of yatra and facilitate the pilgrims. He, however, made it clear that religious affairs of the yatra would continue to be vested with the SASB. He said some elements were spreading false propaganda about the land issue and said that before the revocation of the order, the land in question had neither been demarcated nor handed over to the SASB. The Shrine Board had also not paid money for the land. He said since no land had been diverted to the SASB there was no question of its taking back.
The Chief Minister asked party activists to fan out in different areas of the province and launch a door to door campaign to dispel misgivings created by vested interests. He appealed the people to maintain calm and firmly stick to the traditional communal harmony to foil the designs of enemies of peace out to divide the society on religion and regional basis. He said by disturbing peace in Kashmir its economy was shattered for several years and now some elements were trying to hit the economy of Jammu by misleading people and instigating them on emotive issues.
