| Secret ballot voting or through raising of hands - Assembly yet to decide | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 5 The Assembly secretariat has not yet decided whether the voting on the motion of no confidence against Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, is to be carried out through show of hands or through the secret ballot system.A senior functionary of the Assembly today said "we will decide it by Sunday. So far the issue has not been sorted out."He said under the rules it was upto the speaker to decide between the two options, voting by raising the hands or through secret ballot system Indications are that since the Chief Minister required the support of only three to four MLAs for reaching the magic number of 45 the Congress may prefer voting through secret ballot system which could ensure that those who defy the party whip from the non-Congress camp were not identified.. This option was being preferred by the Congress as it banks on the support of some opposition MLAs.The Congress leadership has not yet decided whether the support could be secured through absention of some MLAs from the House on the day of voting or through open defection. But one thing is certain:success of the Chief Minister depends on his success on achieving the magic figure of 45 through horse trading.According to reports those non congress MLAs who were going to support Azad in the trial of strength of the floor of the House and were hesitant in defying the party whip may prefer staying away from the House on the D-day. |
