| Amarnath land row: Indore tense but under control | | | Indore | July 5
Tension prevailed in curfew-bound Indore city on Saturday, a day after escalated communal violence over the Amarnath shrine row left two more people killed taking the death toll in Madhya Pradesh to seven.
According to the police, cases have been registered against three cops accused of shooting two people to death on Friday.
"An investigation will be launched to look into the allegations after the city returns to normal," deputy inspector general (Indore) D Sriniwas Rao said.
"The situation is peaceful since Friday evening and no incident of fresh violence has been reported from any part of the city," Rao said.
District magistrate Rakesh Choudhry said the situation was "tense but under control".
Authorities took stock of the situation on Saturday morning. Choudhry said the decision to relax the curfew would only be taken after taking stock of the situation once again Saturday afternoon.
At least 140 people have been arrested in the strife torn city where indefinite curfew was imposed on Friday following widespread violence that forced the police to open fire and lob tear-gas shells on rioters at several places. Two people died in the escalated violence.
Four people were killed on Thursday as the shutdown called by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) took a communal turn, prompting the administration to clamp curfew on few places in the city, which was extended later.
The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday cancelled the land allotment to the Amarnath shrine board that manages the Hindu pilgrimage to the high altitude shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva in south Kashmir. |
