Even as Ghulam Nabi Azad’s fate as Chief Minister continues to hang in balance, he is all set to dedicate the country’s one of the best legislature complex his government completed in a record time.
A day ahead of seeking trust vote, the newly come Legislative Assembly complex in Srinagar, where the session is being held in Monday, will be inaugurated on Sunday afternoon. Work on this unique legislative complex was commenced in 1977 during the regime of then Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah but it was abandoned midway. However, Azad got the work resumed on the complex was completed in a record time.
During the last assembly session in Jammu in January this year, the Chief Minister had a statement on the floor of the House that next session shall be held in the new complex in Srinagar and it was being keenly watched whether the Chief Minister could live upto his word. Even though the present session, to prove majority, had to be summoned in an unexpected emergency but the complex stands completed in a record time.
Ahead of its inauguration, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today visited the new Legislature Complex to monitor the final touches being given to the state-of-the-art complex. The Chief Minister had a complete round of the entire complex including the assembly and council halls and the beautifully laid lawns. He was informed that the complex is ready for inauguration.
The Legislature Complex, first of its kind in the country and unique in terms of architecture, design, woodwork and workmanship, was initially started in 1977 when the then Chief Minister Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah laid its foundation on September 27. The construction, however, was subsequently stopped. In 1997, the work was restarted, but after completing about 20 percent construction, it was again stopped in 1998.
Since the holding of the sessions of the Legislature in Srinagar in the old complex was causing severe inconvenience to people at large in view of security restrictions, the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad decided to have a new Legislature Complex in the summer capital. However, when he was told about the abandoned structure, he immediately visited the site and held a high level meeting where it was decided to complete the project within the shortest possible time.
The construction work was finally again taken up in September 2007 and has been completed in nine months. In the meantime, the Chief Minister visited the complex umpteenth times to personally monitor work which was carried out in double and triple shifts. The new Legislature Complex has been completed at a total cost of Rs. 37 crore and is reckoned as the best State legislature building in the entire country.
On his recent visit to Srinagar, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affiars, Priyaranjan Das Munsi was overawed by the outstanding Kashmiri woodwork in the complex and described the building as an exquisite workmanship and design. |
