| Sharda Peeth University proposal shelved for the time being | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 7 The plan for setting up Sharda Peeth University in Kashmir has been, for the time being, shelved. The idea for establishing the university had been conceived by the former Governor, S.K.Sinha.He had deputed a team of experts for identifying land for the proposed project. Three sites, one in Verinag another in Kulgam(both in south Kashmir) and the third in Budgam had been selected. The final selection was to be made by S.K.Sinha in consultation with the team of experts. But the stormy events that surfaced over the diversion of 800 kanals of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board for setting up prefabricated tents at Baltal and Domel which brought the former Governor in the midst of a controversy seems to have forced the Raj Bhawan to abandon the plan.Official sources today said "we do not want to enter into another controversy and it has been decided to drop the idea of setting up Sharda Peeth university for the time being." There are fears that if the idea of setting up Sharda Peeth university was implemented could give birth to a new controversy when the turmoil over the land diversion and later its revocation was yet to end. Jammu continued to shiver under repeated violation of curfew restrictions and by intermittent clashes between the police and the demonstrators seeking land to be retransferred to the Shrine Board. Official sources said that even if a proposal was submitted by the Raj Bhawan for setting up Sharda Peeth university it would not be accepted because of the prevailing situation in the Kashmir valley where people and political leaders, besides the separatists, were watching each move of the Government carefully. |
