Locust surfaces in Leh, administration take measures

With the appearance of Locust in some villages of Changthang area, the authorities in Leh swift into action and sent Agriculture teams with medicines and pesticides to curb the menace.
The Executive Councilor, Agriculture Mr. Tsering Norboo Lampa made a 3-day extensive tour of Changthang and reviewed the pesticide-spray- works at Naga, Khaldo, Bok-shado, Mudh, Tsaga, Rongo, Loma etc. Mr. Lampa has observed that the pesticide has worked efficiently in the locust infested pasture fields. He said that in case of further spread, several pesticide–spray-teams have constituted and would be sent to the effected places. He further said that the people should not fear about Locust as the situation is under satisfactory control.
Mr. Lampa was accompanied by Executuve Councilor Health Sh. Dorjey Mutup, Councilor Nyoma Mr. Nawang Norboo and Chief Agriculture Officer and other officials.
Changthang area has seen the cruel menace of Locust in 2005 and has effected severely the crop fields and pasture land subjecting the population into economic crises.
In the latter years of 2006 and 2007 some considerable amount of Locust appeared but in little number due to the consistent control measures adopted by Agriculture Department. The Locust is now on the extinguishing trend.
Following complaints receiving to SDM, Nyoma Mr. Tsering Norboo made a quick study and submitted a detail report and the authorities swung into action.
The locals pray that the menace of Locust should not appear again which has made them to starve in 2006. They further pray that the pasture field once deserted at Skakjung, Koyul, Loma, Rongo, Anley have turned into lush green, should remain in always gloom.
An old lady Zomskit Angmo of Naga Anlay said that she has not seen the locust since she wed-locked in Naga 54 years back.
