| Power cuts: bear it for three months, Babu Singh | | | Gareeb Dass

There have been several areas in Jammu,including the posh Gandhi Nagar, where power is being supplied for 20 half an hour out of 14 hours' shotdown for the last several days.Power Minister Babu Singh,before he flew to the scenic valley for supporting his chief Minister facing vote of noncofidence motion,has issued a crisp sermon"Since the transformers in Gladini grid station are out of order people have to bear the odds of prolonged power cuts for at least three months."As per him the state Government did a lot of job for finding out immedite and temporary relief for the people by airlifting engineers from the South to rectify one damaged transformer.The engineers declared "since it is very humid in Jammu they cannot open the transformer.If they do it the entire transformer will suffer damage beyond repair."What else you could expect from the Government ?
The Minister had one more interesting piece of news.It may cast gloom on people but the minister had to be straightforward so that he is not accused of hiding facts.He has indicated that since the transformer,needed at Gladini,was not available in the market in India an order has to be placed for it so that the company starts the assembling process. Babu Singh has not divulged whether the Government can place the order to a firm or has it to float tenders,if not global.If the Government has to opt for the tenders to be floated it means it has to wait till the tenders are opened on the last date fixed for their receipt.Another week is required for accepting the tenders.May be another week may be taken to make a choice.It is not necessary that the lowest bidder will get the order.The Government has the right to choose a campany which has the credentials of manufacturing quality transformers.
Now assume the order has been placed within another 10 days.It may take the manufacturer about a month for manufacturing the transformer,if one believes in the Government version that giant sized transformers are not available in the market and when transformer is ready it may take another three weeks for transhipping the machine to Jammu and another one week for installing it.So Babu Singh is right when he said it may take another three months for setting the collapsed power supply system back on the rails.Hence there is no need for finding some short cuts or for exploring some alternative.Please house wives do not fume and fret,do not cry foul if milk and curds you have kept in your refrigerators in your houses gets stale.Maintain peace and communal harmony if cooked vegetables rot in the refrigerators.Please maintain cool if your sleep gets distrubed with inverters having stopped functnioning.
One should give credit to the Government for having constructed the legislature complex in Srinagar and Yatri Bhawan in Jammu in a record time.If people suffer because of prolonged power shutdowns it is not the job of the state authorities alone.People should have,by now,leant a lesson or two.They should install diesel or petrol generators in their houses.That is the only way out.Do not expect the Government to ensure comforts for you when it has remained engaged in building a suitable complex for the legislators whose support the Government needs for completing its term.Yes the Government needs peoples,rather voters,support but for that they have six years' time.But legislatrs can upset the applecart of the Government at any time.Religious preachers,politicians and academicians have been seen suggesting to people not to bid farewell to their tradition and not to snap ties with the past history.People can do it if they learn to live without fans,AC's ,refrigerators like their ancestors who lived happily in Jammu without these comforts 40 to 50 years ago.By resorting to prolonged power cuts the Government tries to force you to believe in austerity measures.It believes in a situation where people are forced to eat fresh food and not the one stored in refrigerators.It wants you to spend less time on sleep which could make one healthy,if not wealhty,and strong. |
