| Guv weighing options of his rule | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 7 The resignation of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has put Jammu and Kashmir into yet another crisis of governance even as hectic consultations have gone underway on adopting the next course of action. As Azad made an imminent exit this morning, the focus has now shifted to the Raj Bhawan and next action of the Governor NN Vohra is being keenly watched. After his speech in the legislative assembly in Srinagar the Azad called on Governor, at Raj Bhavan in the afternoon and handed over letters conveying his resignation as Chief Minister and the resignation of his Council of Ministers. Though the Governor has accepted the resignations but has requested Azad to continue in office till alternate arrangements are made. Observers are now keenly watching the Governor's next action as whether he allows Azad to continue as caretaker or he himself takes over the charge of governance. Experts are of the opinion that the Governor has three options –to invite the largest political party to stake claim for next government formation; allow Azad as caretaker Chief Minister or impose the Governor's rule. Since the leaders of the largest political party –National Conference president Omar Abdullah –has declined to stake claim, the Governor is left with two options. In this backdrop the Governor has kicked off process of consultations. A Raj Bhawan spokesman said that following the acceptance of resignation of Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad and his Council of Ministers, Governor, Mr N N Vohra, invited the leaders of various political parties in pursuance of the Constitutional consultative process. Based on the consultations held by him with the leaders of the various political parties, the Governor is in the process of firming up his assessment of the Constitutional situation for initiating the future course of action, a Raj Bhavan spokesman said. The first to meet the Governor at Raj Bhavan was the President of the National Conference (NC), Mr Omar Abdullah. He was accompanied by Mr Abdul Rahim Rather, Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly. Mr Abdullah informed the Governor about his party's position consequent to the Chief Minister's resignation. Mehbooba Mufti, President, People's Democratic Party (PDP) along with Mr Muzaffar Hussain Beig and Mr Abdul Aziz Zargar, were the next to meet the Governor and conveyed to him PDP's position in regard to the obtaining political situation. He next met a 5-member delegation of Jammu and Kashmir National Panther's Party (JKNPP) led by its President, Professor Bhim Singh. He was accompanied by four Members of the Legislative Assembly belonging to his Party. The Governor concluded his consultations by having a discussion with Mr Mohammed Yousf Tarigami, State Secretary, CPI (M) and MLA. |
