| Betrayed couple makes bid on life | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 8 It is said that misfortune never comes alone. True! The misfortune with a hapless Kashmir Pandit elderly couple has come in many ways in a dingy room at Nagorta migrants’ camp. Ramanand and Vaishno Devi, in their early 70s, never had any complaint with life for seven decades. But things took a depressing turn for the childless couple for South Kashmir to make a bid on life. Putting up in Room no 9 of Nagrota migrant camp, this childless attempted self immolation bid leading to the death of 70 year old Viashno devi. Her husband Ramanand received 80 per cent burn injuries and was still struggling for life in government medical college. Ramanand is a native of village Mendpuri in Damal Hanjipura of district Kulgam and owned 80-90 kanals before migrating from Kashmir valley. Every year he visited his village to get payments from the land tillers .But this year things took an ugly turn when lambardar,reportedly thrashed him and sent him empty handed. Eyewitness accounts said the couple led a secluded life in their dingy room of a migrant camp and was very depressed for few days. Bori Singh a close door neighbour said ever since Ramanand returned home from Kashmir valley he was feeling suffocated and depressed. "Ramanand was unhappy with the fact that he was cheated by people in Kashmir and was not given due respect driving him to suicide". Puran Singh, nephew of the deceased who lives in Gurah Slathia said," the elderly couple had no children and were leading an isolated life after migration from Kashmir in the migrant camp". He said during his interaction with his uncle he had informed him that his property in Kashmir was not giving him due returns. Police investiagting the case said,the couple first doused themselves in kerosene oil and then lit fire.Police said, we are meeting relatives of the deceased to know more about their background and reasosn behind taking this provocative step. |
