| Jammu bounces back to normalcy | | Curfew lifted, agitation temporarily called off; Bar still firm | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 8 As incited passions subsided after the political ruckus, the winter capital city of Jammu and other parts of region were today seen bouncing back to normalcy as authorities first lifted curfew and then extended relaxation for the day during which no incident of violence has been reported. As the day passed off peacefully and the organizations spearheading agitation too put the protests in cold for a week, the authorities, later in the evening, lifted the ongoing curfew completely. It may be mentioned here that the curfew was imposed in Jammu on June 1 following protests and demonstrations on revocation of land transfer order from Shri Amarnath Shrine Board. The authorities said that though the curfew has been lifted but the prohibitory restrictions under section 144 will continue to remain in place. Giving further stability to the situation, the Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti –the multiparty conglomerate of Hindu organizations spearheading the present agitation –has also deferred its agitation for one week. This decision was taken in a meeting of the committee here this afternoon. After lifting of curfew restrictions, life in the town was seen fast returning to normalcy as people thronged to streets for shopping and traders opened their establishments. Though heavy traffic movement was not reported on the city roads but Jammuities went about their businesses in routine. The Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti which met here today also decided to defer its agitation for one week and appreciated role of people of Jammu and adjoining areas in helping them continue their agitation. During the meeting it was also decided to continue protests against the governor NN Vohra till the time the shrine boards' pristine glory is restored and he is removed from the office. "We will continue to hold protests but our approach will be different", member o the Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti said. Representatives of the chamber and commerce and several other trade organisations also supported the idea of deferring the ongoing agitation in view of hardships faced by the people. Initially the authorities had lifted the curfew restrictions from 7 to 12.00 p.m and when no untoward incident was reported in the city the curfew relaxation was extended till 3.00 p.m and later up to 8.00 p.m. Large rush of local residents were seen queuing outside ATM counters at several places to take out money as they were running short of cash as banks also remained closed due to bandh and curfew restrictions. Markets were brimming with routine activity and traffic was plying normally. Reports reaching here form other areas also said that life was limping back to normalcy in these areas and people were returning to attend their businesses and duties. Meanwhile, in a meeting of elders of Bar Association Jammu under the chairmanship of President Bar Association Adv BS Salathia decided to continue the suspension of work in all courts including the High Court Jammu Wing till Saturday and appealed to all the Bar Association of Jammu Province to suspend their work till Saturday. This emergent meeting attended more than 50 Senior Advocates, the meeting which was started 6 PM and concluded on 9:30 PM, not appreciated the decision of suspension of ongoing bandh call by Shri Amarnathji Yatra Sangarsh Samiti without any achievement as the same runs contrary to the sentiments expressed by the people of Jammu and support irrespective of political, religious affiliations. In the meeting it was further decided to include all Regional Bar Associations in the decisions making to chalk out further cause of action. BAJ clarified that it never supported Shri Amarnathji Sangarsh Samiti on the issue of resignation of Chief Minister, therefore, the question of celebration of CM's resignation has been termed as a political motive and it was never the demand of people of Jammu. BAJ in the meeting constituted a committee of Senior Advocates to legally examined the issue of the recommendation made by the Governor which led to the passing of revocation order of land by the State Govt, with regard to use of land by the SASB and prepare a charter of demands. |
