| Overnight halt to VIP culture | | Those who slept powerful woke as commons | | Early Times Reporter Jammu, July 11: One of the most interesting yet intriguing features of the over five and half years old Peoples Democratic Party-Congress alliance was the birth of a unsavory VIP culture across the length and breadth of state which seems to have ended with the abrupt end of coalition government. The coalition government, which ended rather disgracefully early this week, will always be remembered more than any thing for turning every third person into VIP in terms of ‘protocol’. With the hasty end of the coalition rule on Monday, the VIP culture too has come to an overnight grinding halt. This end of VIP culture is not only for those petty workers of the parties who boasted of their powerful connections but has also come as a deadly blow for all members of the Legislative Assembly who were reduced to the common men late last night with the single stroke of Governor NN Vohra’s pen empowered by section 92 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir. When 89 MLAs, including the former Chief Ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, went to sleep last night they were all uncommon representatives of the common masses. However, when they got up this morning, the scenario was entirely different –they were all common men with uncommon past. How these special souls behave in the coming days has to been seen with keen interest. Though a popular government is the best form rule one would like to have but still a man on the street can find difference of having Governor as head of the government for some time. The horde of VIP cars with red hurricane lights hurting public ego and throwing dust in the eyes of passerby will though not be a thing of past but their number will some to a bare minimum. Now onwards the Traffic cops will be able to devote more time to streamlining traffic and decongesting crossings instead of saluting the VIP cars. It is interesting to recall here that the coalition government is credited with throwing more VIPs on the streets than anything else. With PDP and Congress coming to power, several hundreds of their workers even at smaller levels got allotted official vehicles, security and government quarters. At one point of time a situation had reached when it was difficult to find common men on street as every third person flaunted his VIP status and right kind of political connections. Now with the imposition of the Governor’s rule this scenario many not abruptly come to end but there are no more Godfathers to patronize their self styled VIPs. A first indication of the remarkable difference on streets under Governor’s rule was today dropped by none else than the Governor himself. Taking exception to the inconvenience caused to people in Srinagar due to stoppage of traffic this morning during his movement from Raj Bhavan to the Civil Secretariat, Governor, Mr N N Vohra, called for minimizing traffic restrictions to the bare minimum during movements of various signatories. Addressing officers in Civil Secretariat, Mr Vohra said that while security concerns would warrant due caution the traffic restrictions being imposed on key crossings should be for the minimum possible time. "The system will have to be streamlined as people at large cannot be put to inconvenience", he said, adding that this will be discussed with Director General of Police.
