| 872 pilgrims leave for Amarnath Shrine | | Yatra suspended due to heavy rains at Baltal, Pahalgam | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 12 A batch of 872 pilgrims escorted by security personnel left for holy shrine of Amarnath in South Kashmir from Jammu base camp at Bhagwati Nagar on Saturday. Sources informed News Agency of Kashmir, "Braving heavy rains this morning, a batch of 872 pilgrims comprising 198 women, 12 children and 100 Sadhus in a carvan of 19 buses and 11 Light Motor Vehicles, proceeded towards Baltal and Pahalgam base camps at around 5:00 a.m this morning." Meanwhile, sources informed that the Amarnath pilgrimage was suspended because of heavy rains and slippery conditions at Pahalgam and Baltal routes. However, braving heavy rains, 632 pilgrims including some women and children left Baltal base camp for the holy Amarnath cave this morning, maintained sources. Sources said that over five lakh pilgrims from all over the country including Sadhus, had paid obeisance at holy shrine of Amarnath cave since the commencement of the two-month-long annual pilgrimage on June 18. About 43 pilgrims besides two local tea stall owners were killed during the pilgrimage so far while the pilgrimage was suspended many times due to heavy rush of pilgrims at base Baltal and Pahalgam Yatra camps and bad weather conditions. |
