| Muslim emancipation is welcomed | | | | Not going into the merits and demerits of Indo-US nuclear deal, whether the same is in the ultimate interests of the country or in any way compromises national sovereignty, the stand taken by the Muslims of the country by and large over the issue is highly welcomed. There was a general belief that guided by the concern over United States' role viz. a viz. Muslim countries in general and anti American feelings prevailing among the Muslims all over the world, the Indian Muslims may oppose any deal India enters with USA. But displaying maturity and sagacity the Indian Muslims by and large have taken the stand in keeping with their identity as Indians, clearly stating that whatever is in the ultimate interest of the country is dear to them. SO much so that several Muslim religious leaders, besides many social groups and Muslim members of political parties are not influenced by the sore relations between many Muslim countries and USA, but it is the national interest which has weighed more on their minds in taking sides over the Indo-US nuclear deal. Giving rebuff to the spokesman of a CPIM, warning Mulayam Singh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party that by taking stand in favour of the nuclear deal, they will alienate their Muslim voters from the party, all the Muslim members of SP are believed to be solidly behind their leader and the party decision to support the UPA and vote in its favour in the floor test, necessitated after the withdrawal of the support to the UPA government by the left parties. This in no way means that the decision taken by the SP, who till the other day was the part and parcel and a leading partner of UNPA, is principled and not opportunistic, confirming the belief that in politics there are no scruples and principles and there are no permanent friends and foes. But the point here is that the stand taken by Muslims in the country by and large, clearly demonstrates their having shed the sectarian approach and evaluating every issue and problem from sectarian angle and not in the national prospective. That the Muslims are also divided on party lines over the issue and have not taken any stand enblock as Muslims, is a healthy and positive development. In the recent past many Muslim organizations, both social and religious as well as several religious leaders have categorically expressed themselves against any sort of terrorism and have denounced terrorism as anti Islamic. Giving lie to some wrong notions about Muslims as a whole of putting faith in the ideology of religious jehad and indulging in blood shed in the name of religion, it are not only the progressive and forward looking Muslims, but even many Maulvis and Imams of various Muslim shrines have denounced terrorism and have categorically stated that Islam does not teach violence against and killings of innocents, in the name of religion. In doing so they have served the cause of the country as well as of their community and religion in the true sense. |
