| PDP problems yet not over | | EDITORIAL | |
While the crisis to Azad led coalition government is over, the problems facing the PDP are yet to get settled. The war for one upmanship between the out going Deputy Chief Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Baig and the former minister in the Mufti government, Ghulam Hassan mir is still on. The revocation of the suspension of Mir from the PDP, though having been effected, in the wake of his rival in the party Baig losing confidence of the Party High Command and his recall from the Azad cabinet, but Mir has yet to be rehabilitated. In a master stroke Baig has "stooped to conquer", by calling on the PDP patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed offering conciliatory note and assuring to work for the strengthening of the party, by remaining loyal to PDP. This gesture by Baig, even after being shown the door by Mufti, is obviously aimed at blocking the rehabilitation of Mir in the party and his induction in the Azad government with some important position. The possibility of Ghulam Hassan Mir replacing Baig in the Azad cabinet and tipped as Deputy Chief Minister, appears to have receded for the time being, with Baig showing conciliatory gesture and conveying an impression of his readiness to work in an any capacity in the party, as the leadership decides. Mufti Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the party still appear to be undecided about appointing their point man in Azad government. They are still undecided as to whom to recommend for the post of Deputy Chief Minister. In the present day politics, where loyalty to the leader counts more than a person's capability and competence Muftis would still like to be sure of the loyalty to them of a leader in the party whom they can recommend for the slot of Deputy Chief Minister they cannot immediately repose trust and have confidence in Ghulam Hassan Mir, who in past had developed serious differences with the father and daughter duo, because of his failure to blindly toe their line and personal likes and dislikes. Although his rivalry for seniority in the party and nomination to the post of Deputy Chief Minister was with Muzaffar Hussain Baig, yet Mir was also not reconciled to adventurism of Muftis. Thus the problems facing the PDP are still not over and differences within the party are yet to be resolved. There is no other competent leader of a stature in the PDP other than Mir and Baig, whom the party can recommend for Deputy Chief Ministership, that can be digested by the people at large. While the closest confident of the Muftis at present, Tariq Hamid Qara is a novice in the ministry having become a minister for the first time only ten month ago, another senior party leader and a long time minister in different governments, Ahdhul Aziz Zargar, whom the PDP had earlier, in hast elected as legislature party leader, cannot be acceptable to the Congress as the Deputy Chief Minister, in view of allegations against him with solid evidence, in the past that the plot to strike at Akshar Dam temple in Gujrat, in 2002 was hatched by the terrorists at his residence in his village home, in Anantnag district. It is already hard to digest the inclusion of Zargar in the Congress led government, as a cabinet minister, accepting him a Deputy Chief Minister will make Congress vulnerable to the attack by the party opponents of harbouring terrorists.
