Leh, September 06,2006. Food Corporation of India has constructed a new 10,000 MT Godown at Leh which would be inaugurated by Sh. A.K.Dubey, IAS, Chairman and Managing Director, Food Corporation of India on September, 9. The Corporation started its operation in Leh in the Year 1992 with the construction of 2500 MT godown. Another 2500 MT capacity was added in the existing complex in the year 1999. Prior to the year 1992, FCI used to hand over requirement of Leh district to State Food department at Srinagar itself for further distribution. Since route to Leh remains open for limited period from June to September, FCI stores full year’s requirement in its godowns and wheat, rice and sugar are issued round the year from FCI depots to State Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and Defence Forces. About 1.10 lac population of District Leh living in Nubra, Neuma, Khalsi, Durbuk and other far off places are supplied foodgrains from this depot. Defence forces which are stationed in Leh and forward areas like Siachen glacier are provided wheat and rice throughout the year from Food Storage Depot Leh. Since there is about 15,000 MT annual requirement of stocks for Targetted Public Distribution System, Defence and other centrally sponsored welfare schemes, the construction of the new 10,000 MT storage capacity FCI godown in Leh will fully provide food security in this most difficult and highest place in the world.
