| SC for measures to punish cops who refuse to register FIRs | | | New Delhi | July 14 Turning the heat on errant policemen, the Supreme Court on Monday asked states and UTs to frame guidelines for taking action against cops who refuse to register FIRs. A bench of Justice B N Aggrawal and G S Singhvi directed the Director Generals of Police (DGsP) and Commissioners of Police to file their response within three week and posted the matter for further hearing to August 8. The apex court said such a guideline was essential to ensure that the erring officers were prosecuted and sent to jail for neglecting duty. The bench regretted that despite a number of its earlier directions, the police in several cases have been refusing to register FIRs. The bench passed the order on a Habeas Corpus petition filed by Bhola Kamat whose 16-year-old daughter who was abducted by some persons in a land dispute. Kamat allegedly filed a complaint with the police who allegedly threatened him to withdraw it enter into a compromise with the accused, including an advocate, Sobha Gupta. "It is a disturbing state of affairs," the bench observed while asking the accused and the Uttar Pradesh Police to file their detailed reply on the allegations. |
