What's more important?
3/17/2020 9:02:45 PM
Revival of political activities in Jammu and Kashmir has triggered a debate about what's more important, restoration of statehood or a substitute to Article 370.
Both the demands were raised in Jammu region soon after J&K's reorganization on August 5, 2019. But now the Kashmir centric politicians seem to have high jacked both the issues. They are playing politics over these points which can become an election plank for them later.
Barring a few, most Kashmir centric leaders, who were detained soon after the abrogation of Article 370, have been set free. The ones who were released are trying to maintain silence over all the issues as they don't want to end up in soup again. This has led to the emergence of a new political force in Kashmir. This force is talking about what could be achieved.
Recently president of the newly floated Apni Party, Altaf Bukhari, along with the leaders, who have joined him, called on Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah in the national capital. The delegation raised the demand of restoration of J&K's statehood and it was assured by both the Prime Minister and Home Minister that demand will be looked into.
On the other hand BJP leaders in Jammu are raising the issue of having a domicile law at place. They have been demanding that Centre should come up with a law which protects the rights and identity of the locals. But this demand needs to be raised vociferously and it needs to be taken to its logical end.
Jammu is more accessible to people than Kashmir. More people would like to settle in Jammu rather than going to the Valley. Jammu due to its connectivity and being peaceful is the most preferred destination for the people coming from other parts of the country.
Jammu based leaders have to rise to the occasion to protect the identity and culture of the people of Jammu region. They cannot allow Kashmir centric leaders to run away with everything. Jammu leaders have to stand up and put their act together. The demand for the statehood and domicile law are the important issues.
If these two demands are met before the assembly elections are held in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, it can help the political parties to go out and seek votes. Politicians will have something to sell. If they are unable to convince the Centre then politicians will be left with no other option other than relying on slogans.
