BSF in talks to have e-border security system
7/16/2008 11:40:51 PM
Farnborough | July 16
The security along India's over 7,400-km long frontier with Pakistan and Bangladesh could soon go hi-tech, with the Border Security Force in talks with a leading US firm to install an electronic monitoring system.
The system is likely to help India in tackling major concerns of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, besides infiltration from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir.
The BSF is in talks with US security systems major Raytheon on possibilities of having an electronically operated, sensor-based border security system and has also started exploring other international products on offer.
"Raytheon is in the process of understanding the BSF's requirements and has held a few rounds of preliminary discussions with the Indian security agency for providing our border and critical infrastructure protection solutions," the company's International Business Development vice president Gerald W Tobey said here on wednesday.
"There is a good potential market and we would like to use the opportunity to provide the best, tried and tested security system for BSF's role on India's borders," Tobey said on the sidelines of the week-long Farnborough International Air Show, where Raytheon is participating in a big way.
Not only border security, Raytheon would be interested in providing security solutions to valuable assets and infrastructure in India such as airports, harbours and offshore oil and gas installations, Tobey said.
The company has already explored possibilities of getting associated with the security of both Bangalore and Hyderabad airports with its Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS), which are already in operation at four New York and New Jersey airports.
