Jammu | July 16
With deadlock on the Shri Amarnath Shrine land transfer row persisting, Jammu City and many other parts of the region today observed a complete shut down on the call of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti and supported by many other organizations.
Meanwhile, the Governor who was in Jammu for three days, apparently to talk to the agitating parties today flew out to Srinagar without cutting any ice. Though he made repeated pleas for discussing with representatives of the Sangharsh Samiti but talks could not be brokered during his three day stay here at the Raj Bhawan.
Public transport kept off the roads and most of the government establishments too remained shut as people could not reach their offices. Though some incidents of clashes have been reported from areas, including Rajouri, but the shut down and protest demonstration generally remained peaceful.
Protestors blocked Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Nagrota and damaged window panes of several vehicles. However, entire Jammu city witnessed massive protests against the Governor N N Vohra where protestors burnt his effigy and demanded that Vohra should be recalled with immediate effect, maintained sources.
Reports said that the protestors including activists of BJP, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and other organizations blocked Tawi bridge for several hours and shouted slogans against Governor N N Vohra, PDP and separatist leaders.
Some angry protestors pelted stones on police personnel and smashed several vehicles in Rajouri district when they were protesting against the former state government's decision of revocation of forest land transfer order. Police also resorted to baton charge and teargas shells to disperse the agitated mob.
Kathua and Samba districts observed complete shutdown and no untoward incident was reported from any part of these districts. However, protestors took out protests rallies and burnt the effigy of Governor N N Vohra, PDP and separatists leaders.
Reports from Udhampur, Bhaderwah, Reasi, Katra, Doda and Kishtwar said that complete shutdown was reported in all the towns. No vehicle was allowed to ply on road while shops and business establishments remained closed throughout the day.
Meanwhile, the BJP lashed out at the Congress and National Conference leaders here for defending the decision revoking transfer of land to the Amarnath shrine board, describing the move as "communally motivated",
"It is a matter of shame that Jammu-based Congress and NC leaders, are defending the cabinet decision taking back 39.88 hectares of land from Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to show solidarity with Kashmiri fundamentalists," Pradesh BJP president Ashok Khajuria said.
He said it was unfortunate that they were supporting the July 1 cabinet decision at a time when people of Jammu province, cutting across party and religious lines, are organising massive bandhs and demonstrations to force the Governor N N Vohra to reverse the order.
Advising them to stop playing with the religious sensitivities of the Hindus across the country, the BJP leader asked them to join the ongoing agitation spearheaded by the Sangharsh Samiti demanding restoration of the land to the board.
Failure on their part to join the movement would only further provoke the already angry people of the province, he warned.
Reiterating the party's full support to the ongoing agitation Jammu, Khajuria blamed the Governor and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for the current turmoil. Claiming that Raj Bhawan officials were constantly persuading the agitators to discuss their grievances with the Governor, he said, "We will not talk to the governor till land is not restored to SASB."
