| Gujjars demand political reservation, call on Governor | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | July 18 The Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir today demanded reservation of 21 assembly constituencies and 10 seats in Upper House to the Scheduled Tribe communities has been done in the case Scheduled Caste’ community. In this connection a delegation of Gujjars called on Governor N.N Vohra, here at summer capital today. The delegation led by Ashfaq-ur-Rehman Poswal, State President of Akhil Bharatiya Gujjar Mahasabha, called on the Governor and apprised him about the problems and difficulties being faced by the tribal population of the State due of lack of a political voice and urged him to issue an SRO providing "political reservation to ST" communities including Gujjars. The delegation made it clear to the Governor that any proposal aiming at providing ST status to Pahari speaking people of the State would be opposed tooth and nail by the Gujjars.. The delegation also demanded that in order to protect their properties and the identity, the Gujjars in J&K should be categorized as "Religious Minority" in the Jammu region and "Ethno-Linguistic Minority" in Kashmir valley. The delegation urged the Governor to immediately dissolve and reorganize the State Board for the development of Gujjars as the existing body is defunct and alleged that the government has recently appointed a non-Gujjar as Secretary in the Board. The other demands put forth included raising of Gujjar Regiment in Indian Army, allotment of land for rehabilitation nomadic gujjars, inclusion of Gojri language in the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution , Speedy implementation of developmental schemes for Gujjars, introduction of cattle insurance scheme, enhancement of seats for Gujjars in Professional Colleges, relaxation of age bar in favour of Gujjar candidates in Police and other recruitments, providing employment to trained professional graduates and suitable market facilities for livestock and milk products. |
