| Gill serious about independent infrastructure for DYSS | | | SANJEEV SHARMA Jammu | July 18 Though a big department, yet without an independent infrastructure to hold sports events on, the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) has, this time, started putting in some serious efforts to `own’ a piece of land to raise infrastructure. With having been assigned the task to hold sports events at grass root level that too round the year as also hosting of national tournaments, the department often finds it difficult to arrange things at the `out dated and ill equipped set-up’ of the autonomous sports body-- J&K State Sports Council. Except for a few technical people in certain disciplines, the State Sports Council hardly provides quality infrastructure to the Department to hold school competitions in a smooth manner. Otherwise responsible for teaching the students physical education and moral values through its work force of Physical Education Teachers and Masters posted in almost every government-run educational institution throughout the state, the Department feels it inconvenient as and when need arise for holding mega events. The begging letters by officials concerned to hold school, district and state level events, sometimes are turned down either by the University of Jammu or the State Sports Council thus brining in dejection among the work force of the department. The decision of the government to depute a joint head to run DYSS and Sports Council, for the last some time, however, brought in some relief for officers concerned. But, again, a separate head has been given to DYSS with the posting of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), P S Gill as Director General of the department replacing a KAS officer, Ravinder Gupta. Interestingly, his love for sports and zeal to do something for the department during his `brief stay’ in the DYSS, Mr Gill has started taking concrete steps to provide the Department at least its `own space’. Realising that the Department is in dire need of some space to build up independent infrastructure, the Director General has initiated the process. “To start with, the Director General, accompanied by Assistant Director (Jammu), Ashok Kumar paid visits to different sites to find appropriate piece of land for building infrastructure,” a senior officer of the DYSS told SAN. Happy over the positive approach of this top police officer from Punjab, where sports gets due importance, the Department pins high hopes on the new head. |
