| Postponement of Kashmir poll linked with PM’s fate | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 19 Though the way the election commission has initiated measures for preparing elector photo identity cards indicates that the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be held as per the schedule between the end of October and the middle of November, the election process could be postponed in case the the Manmohan Singh lost the vote of confidence on the floor of the Lok Sabha. It could be deferred if Manmohan Singh resigned before going for trial of atrength which could result in early general elections in the country. Experts are of the opinion that once the Manmohan Singh led Government lost the vote of confidence there would be no other alternative but for holding the Lok Sabha election. For the President of India there was an alternative by way of exploring the possibility of other political parties to stake claim for the for mation of the Government. That possibility is remote because neither the Congress nor the BJP will support any other combine and nor the leftists were ready to form the Government with inside or outside support of other political groups. And if the ecents warrant holding of the general election somewhere in March-April 2009 the Election Commission may prefer linking the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir with the general election as had happened in 1977. Another possibility for the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir to get deferred was if the law and order situation assumed alarming dimensions following sudden escalation in the level of violence. The poll in the state could be postponed if Dr Manmohan Singh,as head of the caretaker Government, could persuade the Chief Election Commission to link the Kashmir polls with the general election which is the demand of the majority of leaders belonging to the state unit of the Congress. Governor,N.N.Vohra,is said to be in favour of holding the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir towards the end of October.. |
