J&K ties up with MNCs to boost vegetable cultivation

Buoyed by a record vegetable production of about 7 lakh tones last year valued at Rs 700 crore, the Jammu and Kashmir government is roping in MNC firms to buy the products in bulk which would help to boost cultivation and marketing Ianthe region.
About 1.25 lakh tones of off-season vegetables valued at about Rs. 150 crore have been exported from the valley last year and those worth rs 175 crore are expected to be exported this year, Principal Secretary Agricultural Production Sonali Kumar said on Sunday.
Kumar, who inspected the vegetable nurseries in Budgam district, said the area is fast emerging as a vegetable production centre in the valley.
Kumar also inspected some floriculture units in the district set up by progressive entrepreneurs after getting training from the Entrepreneurship Development Institute.
She said 100 polygreen houses have been sanctioned for growers at subsidized rates to encourage cultivation of vegetables and floriculture.
