| Waters recede in J-K rivers, 12 lakh people affected | | | Srinagar, Sep 6 Water level in rivers and their tributaries in Jammu and Kashmir receded further today but nearly 12 lakh people spread over 495 villages were still reeling from floods which have damaged 382 houses and claimed 15 lives so far.
Water level in main river Jehlum was fast receding at upstream Sangam, 40 kms from here, in Anantnag district, but it was still flowing above danger mark at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar, Shadipora and Asham downstream in Baramulla.
Water level in Jehlum at Sangam came down to normal level at 21.10 feet at 11 AM, the officials said.
However, it was flowing 2.20 feet above red mark at Ram Munshi Bagh and 3.32 feet at Ashram in Baramulla district, they said.
Even as losses caused by the floods were still being assessed, nearly 12 lakh population spread over 495 villages in the state was still reeling from floods, officials said.
They said 382 houses and other structures were partially damaged while 731 others were also affected due to floods.
A large number of boats have been pressed into service to ferry marooned people to safety in the worst hit areas of Anantnag, Pulwama and Srinagar. As many as 263 persons were rescued by in Srinagar.
No fresh traffic was allowed today on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only surface link between Kashmir valley and rest of the country, which opened last evening to traffic after remaining closed for four days.
No vehicle has been allowed from Srinagar to Jammu on the highway today as preference is being given to stranded vehicles, a spokesman of the traffic department said. |
