| Major, cop dead in Rajouri | | Tourist among two killed in Gulmarg explosion | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 20 In yet another incident of terror an Army Major lost his life in an encounter with militants in Rajouri district while a cop of Jammu and Kashmir Police too have been reported killed and three others injured in the incident in which militants managed to escape. The incident occurred late last night in Forest areas of Thanna Mandi Tehsil in Rajouri district. Reports said that on specific information Troops of 43 RR and Special group of Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a joint operation in forest area of Than Mandi late last night. Soon after the troops reached the dense forests, the militants hiding there showered of bullets with automatic weapons, leaving an army major and a police cop dead. Three others sustain bullet injuries. The militants, sources claimed, escaped from the cordon in cover of indiscriminate firing, however police said that the militants managed to hide in dense forests and search operation was going on to tackle them down. Sources said that Maj Bhanu Partap actually belong to 8 Raj Riffles and is resident of Jaipur; He was on deputation to 43 RR. Two soldiers and a policeman have also sustained bullet injuries during the encounter. When contacted Defense Spokesman Lt Col SD Goswami, said that on specific information a joint operation by troops of 43 RR and Jammu and Kashmir Police was launched in Kunda forest area of Thana Mandi in Rajouri. He said 29 year old Maj. Bhanu Partap of 43 Rashtriya Rifles and Sanjeev of Kashmir police lost their lives while two soldiers Sepoy Ravinder Singh and Lance Naik Gyan Prakesh were critically injured in the gun fight. The injured are being treated in Rajouri Hospital where their condition is stated to be stable; he said and added that the search operation was going on till last reports. Meanwhile, Lashkar-e-Toiba has claimed the responsibility of the attack and claimed that its cadres 'inflicted heavy causality to the security forces'. In militancy related incident, two persons, including a tourist, died and four others were injured in a grenade attack in Gulmarg Baramulla. A Police spokesman said that at 5 PM this evening unidentified militants hurled a grenade on a Sumo Stand near telephone exchange in Gulmarg. In this incident, two persons namely Ashok Kumar S/O Ram Shankan R/O Utter Pradesh, Mohmmad Yousf S/O Jalaudin R/O Baba Resi died on the spot and four persons namely, Juginder Swami R/O UP, Bashir Ahmad S/O Mohammad Sadiq R/O Sopore, Pervaiz Ahmad S/O Mohammad Maqbool R/O Chandusa Tangmarg and Tahir Ahmad S/O Mohammad Khalil R/o Sopore sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to SDH Tangmarg where their condition is said to be stable. |
