Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 16: Volunteers of NGO ABABEEL who were distributing food kits among the poor people in Galhar and Keru areas falling under Police Station Padder were detained by Police. These volunteers alleged that Police threatened to lodge a FIR against them for doing the social work. It’s strange that police are “harassing” volunteers at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has applauded the role of volunteers as well as the NGOs and Jammu and Kashmir government has also invited the volunteers to get themselves registered so that their services could be utilised for distribution of ration, medicines and other essentials among the people during lockdown period. According to the details available with Early Times, when volunteers of ABABEEL were busy in distribution of food kits among needy, the Padder police without any reason stopped them from distribution of the same and detained all the volunteers who were a part of the distribution team and shifted them to police Station Padder.
Talking to Early Times, the detained volunteers said that the police without any reason stopped them from distributing food kits among the needy. “We were threatened by the SHO Padder Sarabjeet Singh and SDM Padder Varun Jeet. They threatened us with FIR and putting us under quarantine,” they alleged.
“The SDM told police to call BMO Padder and put us under quarantine. He shouted at us for mustering courage to distribute food kits without taking permission from them as the area belonged to them” said the detained volunteers.
A senior official in District Administration when contacted told the Early Times that necessary directions have been issued to Police and SDM Padder for ensuring safety and release of all the volunteers of NGO ABABEEL.
The officer while hailing the role of NGOs said that NGOs are playing a key role during ongoing pandemic and added that District Administration has not passed any directions to Padder administration to stop NGOs from carrying out their social activities.
The ABABEEL NGO in the past has taken lead in Kishtwar District during major road accidents. It has played an important role in contributing towards patient care and welfare at District Hospital Kishtwar due Health and Medical emergencies.
Since the lockdown has been imposed the NGO has distributed nearly 300 food kits among poor families in Kishtwar District. It has also helped in shifting critically ill patients from Kishtwar to Jammu.
Despite repeated attempts, neither SDM Padder nor SHO Padder could be reached for their comments.
When last report came in— the volunteers had not been released from Police Station Padder.
