| Police foil LeT bid to attack Amarnath pilgrims | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | July 21 The Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday claimed to have scuttled a plan of the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) to attack Amarnath pilgrims following the killing of two hardcore Pakistani militants in the state. The two Pakistan-based militants of LeT were killed in an encounter with police at village Nagabal-Derand in Ganderbal district on Sunday night, foiling a plan of the outfit to attack the pilgrims on their return from the cave shrine, a police spokesperson said. He said the encounter took place after police cordoned off the village along the Srinagar-Leh national highway following intelligence inputs that LeT militants were planning to attack a yatra convoy bound for Srinagar from the Baltal base camp. The slain ultras were identified as Syed Abid Ahmad alias Akasha of Narwal-Punjab and Sageer Shah alias Garian of Iptabad Subah Sarah in Pakistan. Two AK rifles, 10 magazines, 96 rounds of ammunition and two grenades were recovered from the slain militants, who were wanted in a large number of civilian killings in the district, the spokesman said. In another incident, a self-styled battalion commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) was killed in a joint operation by police and Rashtriya Rifles at Waddarbala in Kupwara district last night, the spokesperson said. The slain HM militant was identified as Abdul Ahad Alias Haroon. An AK rifle, three magazines, 15 rounds of ammunition and two grenades were recovered from Haroon. In yet another incident, militants hurled a hand grenade towards a police station at Dangiwacha in north Kashmir's Baramulla district around 9.15 pm on Sunday, the spokesperson said. The grenade fell short of the target and exploded on the roadside without causing any damage or casualty. |
