| Poll postponement chances have become bleak | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 24 The chances for Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir getting postponed have receded following Manmohan Singh's win in the trial of strength on the floor of the Lok Sabha.Reports had started circulating in the state that if the Congress led Government in the centre was defeat while seeking vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha the Assembly poll could get deferred because in that case people in Jammu and Kashmir could have not been inconvenienced by making them go the polls in October and then in March-April when the Lok Sabha elections were to be held. Governor N.N.Vohra has already announced that the Assembly poll would be held as per the schedule and there was no idea of postponing it.Various political parties, including the National Conference, the BJP and the Panthers Party, favour holding of the election before the middle of November.Since the Election Commssion has initiated measures for issuing elector photo identity cards to the voters it is also an indication that preparations were afoot for holding the election on time. However, security experts are of the opinion that ultimately the anouncement of the poll schedule will depend on the situation in the state. They said that in case militants suceed in escalating the level of violence in the state there were possibilities of postponing the election.Referring to the series of recent militancy related incidents the the experts said that if violence further increased it may not allow free and fair poll. But political leaders were of the opinion that in 1989 the Lok Sabha elections were held even when militancy related violence had peaked. |
