| Manmohan as PM again? No decision yet | | | New Delhi | July 24 There was intense speculation on Wednesday that the Congress high command has decided to project Manmohan Singh as the party's prime ministerial candidate in the next election — an assertion that top party sources strenuously denied late in the evening. The general expectation in the party has been that Rahul Gandhi would be projected as the next Congress leader, However, in the wake of Manmohan Singh steering the government to a trust vote win, there was speculation about his elevation in the party hierarchy. One television channel even ran a report saying that Singh he would be projected as the PM candidate in the next election. However, when contacted, party sources insisted that no such decision has been taken. They pointed out that it was uncharacteristic of the party to name anyone as PM-designate, unless the leader was from the Gandhi family, in which event the question of leadership is settled. |
