Left, BJP, BSP lose face with PM's victory
7/24/2008 11:36:15 PM
Gareeb Dass
Jammu | July 24
The leftists have lost the face and the BJP its grace by the victory of the Manmohan Singh led Government on the floor of the Lok Sabha, during the trial of strength. And if Ms Mayawati, the BSP supremo, who was being projected as the future Prime Minister, lost both her face and grace because she had been in the forefront of using money and muscle power for denting the Samajwadi Party, led by Mulayam Singh Yadav. If other groups that were benefitted by the win of the vote of confidence was Lalu Prasad Yadav and Amar Singh, the two key players who managed to help Manmohan Singh in getting the required number for retaining power.
Right from day one when Mayawati announced that her party will oppose the vote of confidence and Mulayam Singh Yadav having crossed to the side of the Congress the BJP leadership had been placed between the devil and the deep sea.For days it weighed the pros and cons of opposing the motion on vote of confidence. It thought that by opposing the the motion the hands of Mayawati would get stronger and by supporting it Mulayam Singh could be in the centre stage of prominence and power.Possibly it chose a safer route by not preventing cross voting from its MPs.What is more important that the BJP leadership did not succeed in cashing on the incident of bribing three party MPS by supporters of the Government. The incident boomranged After Lalu Prasad and Amar Singh vehemently denied having bribed the BJP MPs.
As far as the impact of Manmohan's win on the future political scene in Jammu and Kashmir is concerned the Congress has found its allies in both the National Conference and the PDP.Whatever remarks Omar Abdullah made while supporting the nuclear deal on the floor of the Lok Sabha should have been music to the ears of the Congress in general and Manmohan Singh in particular.During the last five years the National Conference had made a consistent bid to go close to the congress by lending support to its Government whenever the PDP,which shared power with the Congress, created some problem for the ruling coalition.Even former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had been in favour of seeking support from the National Conference so that he had not to stomach problems and conflicts generated by the PDP.But everytime Ms Sonia Gandhi opposed any alliance with the National Conference. Now the scene has changed. The two members of the National Conference supported the confidence motion at a time when even one vote was crucial for Manmohan Singh.
In the light of these developments the Congress,in case the next election threw up a hung Assembly, has wide choice for forming the coalition Government. It can forge alliance either with the National Conference or the PDP.The Congress wll remain in demand for support from both the PDP and the National Conference because notwithstanding the fact that in politics there are no permanent friends or foes, the question of PDP-NC alliance may nenver materilise.
Omar Abdullah has announced that the National Conference will not forge any alliance with the Congress during the elections but he has remained silent whether the party will support or seek support from the congress in the Government formation after the elections were over. This indicates that he has kept the doors open for the formation of a coalition Government with the Congress.
