Jammu | July 24
After a nightlong of high drama and doubtful role of some Police officers, the martyr of Shri Amarnath Shrine agitation was today cremated in Bishnah where locals clashed with Police leaving tens of them injured.
In an ill conceived manner which has been condemned by all, a Police party led by one DySP Mohal Lal Kaith shifted the body of Kuldeep Kumar from Parade in the dead of late last night to Bishnah.
The Police had made an attempt to cremate the body but the locals foiled it. In an apparent bid to cremate the body for preventing its politicization, the Police party arranged cremation at Bishnah. However, the first jolt to the Police plan was received when the local Pujari Shravan Nandgiri fled the spot and refused to become a party of the Police plan.
Later hundreds of locals rushed to the spot and rescued the body from Police. Many local eye witnesses said that several of the cops were drunk and they poured liquor on pyre as kerosene for lighting wood logs was not immediately available to them.
Police force enacted a high voltage drama at the dharna site in Parade ground area when they forcefully removed and bundled out activists and family members of Kuldeep, mourning by his side with his dead body in Parade Ground, in police buses and took them to undisclosed destination. Brig. Suchet Singh of Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti alleged that more than 400 policemen forcefully removed him and thrashed him along with several women relatives of Kuldeep Kumar before packing them inside buses for an unknown destination.
He said he along with few other activists managed to escape from the custody of the police and alerted residents in Bisnah to prevent cremation of Kuldeep by the police.
Singh alleged that timely action by the local residents in Bisnah saved the day as policemen had attempted to perform last rites using liquor and other material hurting sentiments of Hindus.
"The police officers under instructions from their higher ups also forcefully shifted dead body of Kuldeep Kumar to Bisnah and made an attempt to perform last rites without paying heed to the pleas of relatives and close family members", Leela Karan Sharma convener of the sangarsh samiti alleged and demanded action against the police officers responsible for inhuman and insensitive act.
Family members of Kuldeep alleged manhandling and harassment at the hands of the police officers on duty and demanded action against them.
Meanwhile, defying curfew restrictions which were imposed by district authorities early thursday morning across Jammu and several other adjoining areas including Bisnah, RS Pura and Arnia large number of protesters came out on the streets and demaded removal of Governor NN Vohra.
The protesters fought pitched battles with police in Bisnah before mortal remains of Kuldeep Kumar were cremated in his village in Bisnah. Situation remained by and large peaceful in Jammu city.
Spontaneous protests were witnessed across Jammu soon after the news of youths sacrifice spread like a wild fire in Jammu and adjoining areas since Wednesday. Angry activists of the Sangarsh Samiti on Wednesday enforced closure of shops and disrupted vehicular movement at several places in Jammu to express their anger.
The activists were demanding revocation of the Amarnath land transfer order and recall of Governor NN Vohra. Angry mob defied curfew restrictions and came out on the streets demanding recall of Governor NN Vohra and rescinding Amarnath land transfer order in Bishnah.
The protesters also torched police vehicle and thrashed police men in full public view forcing police men to fire teargas shells in the air to quell the agitating mob.
Convener of the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti Leela Karan Sharma said the supreme sacrifice of Kuldeep Kumar would not go waste. He said agitations would continue till Amarnath land transfer order was revoked by the Governor NN Vohra. On the request of district administration army has been kept stand by to restore normalcy in the sensitive areas.
