| Guv renews appeals, back to Srinagar | | | Early Times Reporter

Before flying out of Jammu this afternoon, the Governor NN Vohra has renewed his appeal for peace but situation in region remains as volatile as it was a month back.
Vohra will be completing tomorrow his full one month in office but situation has not moved an inch towards improvement even as he once again reiterated that there is nothing which can not be resolved by dialogue. This true, dialogue can lead amicable resolution of all issues but it is not seen happening around in the present situation where Jammu continues to burn.
Putting the administration on tenterhooks, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti has extended the shut down call for another three days.
While there is every likelihood of tension aggravating in these three days, the Governor will be outside the state during this time. Mr Vohra who toured the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch on Wednesday was here till today when he flew out to Srinagar. Tomorrow he will be leaving for New Delhi for next three days.
Before leaving for Srinagar, the today renewed his appeal to the people of Jammu to maintain peace, reiterating that there is no issue which cannot be resolved through dialogue.
Interacting with several deputations here, the Governor appreciated the sagacity of the Jammu people in meeting various challenges with fortitude and expressed confidence that they would continue to keep the torch of amity and brotherhood aloft at all costs.
Referring to the problems faced by the common people, Mr Vohra stated that every possible effort is being made to ensure effective delivery of public utilities. He said that steps are underway to improve power supply in Jammu and other parts of the region, which have been witnessing acute power shortage due to the failures in the Gladni Grid Station.
Responding to the demand made by All Party Pahari Speaking Forum about the grant of Scheduled Tribe status to the community, the Governor said that this matter had been agitated over the past several years and assured the Forum that he would duly take up their demand with the Union Home Minister.
The 30-member delegation, led by Mr Shabbir Ahmed Khan, Vice Chairman, Pahari Advisory Board, comprised representatives of almost all political parties and included, Mirza Abdul Rasheed, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Bukhari, Mr Ravinder Sharma, Mr Phulail Singh, Mr Babu Ram Sharma, Mr Kamal Bakshi and Mr Naseem Manhas.
More than a dozen delegations of various political parties and social organistions met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan and apprised him of their problems. In certain cases, Mr Vohra gave on- the-spot instructions for redressal of grievances and assured the deputationists that their various demands would be considered early.
A 7-member deputation of Photo Journalists of Jammu also met the Governor this morning and brought to his notice the alleged police actions against some of their colleagues last night. Mr Vohra asked Deputy Commissioner, Jammu to immediately look into the complaint of the journalists.
Among the other deputations which met the Governor included representatives of Other Backward Classes Organisation, Bahujan Samaj Party, Jammu and Kashmir Sikh Forum and Indian Olympic Association. |
