| Cremation a right of family members: J&K PUCL | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 25 While mourning the death of Kuldeep Raj Verma, allegedly by suicide, Balraj Puri, convenor of the People Union for Civil Liberties J&K State, criticized the police for reportedly using force to snatch the body of the suicide victim from the members of this family and trying to cremate it at Bishnah against the wishes of the bereaved family. He said, "Cremation of the dead is a private affair of the family of the deceased. Neither the government nor the political parties can do it without their consent." Puri demanded an independent inquiry into the conduct of the police during the two crucial days following the suicide of Kuldeep Raj which aggravated the already tense situation. The reported beating of the photo journalists, too, was a matter of serious concern, he said. Puri also condemned the grenade attack on civilians at Batmaloo in Srinagar which killed four children and their mother and injured 25, including 18 yatris. He expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and the injured. |
