Need to stop fomenting turmoil in city of temples
7/26/2008 12:38:15 AM
Gareeb Dass
Jammu | July 25
Kuldeep Kumar Dogra has become a martyr. He has died for a cause and thereby has shown that people in Jammu can go to any extent while protesting against injustice. But if some political parties try to cash on the incident that rocked Jammu will be an insult to the martyrdom of Kuldeep. There is no doubt that whatever the state Government and later the Governor have done is a great injustice to the people of Jammu. It has further lent credence to the charge of regional discrimination because the Government succumbed to the violence that had been kicked up in Kashmir by groups of political activists and separatists clamouring over the diversion of 800 kanals of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board. It was but natural that the Jammuites reacted to the land revocation order with greater strength than what one experienced in Kashmir.
The Government has erred.Political leaders, especially belonging to the PDP and the National Conference, made a mistake by forcing the former Chief Minister to revoke the land diversion order. Both the PDP and the National Conference did not want Kashmiri separarists to take the centre stage by agitating against the diversion of land to the Shrine Board hence they went a step further in inciting people. They had an eye on the ensuing election.President of the National Conference,Omar Abdullah said on the floor of the Lok Sabha that'Kashmiri muslims were fighting for a case and they will continue to do so.If land was again diverted to the Board it will be done on the dead bodies of Kashmiri muslims."A statement enough to shock and incite people in Jammu. The same statement is said to have been responsible for Kuldeep Dogra's extreme step that he took in Jammu on Wednesday.
What is the way out when the Jammuites want the land to be diverted to the Board and those in Kashmir against it ?Before trying to find a solution I wish to explain to the readers that prior to the diversion of 800 kanals of land to the Shrine Board the Board used to set up canvas and prefabricated tents at various sites on the mountain route leading to the holy cave.Never has the successive Governments, since 2000 when the Board was constituted, raised any objection to this programme. And over the years the main job of providing health cover for pilgrims, make available electricity supply, drinking water and providing security cover have remained in the hands of the state Government.Even the state Government would keep separate fleet of buses ready for the yatris for their journey from Jammu to Pahalgam or to Baltal.Even after the land diversion order has been cancelled the Government has not debarred the Board from setting up prefabricated tents.
If it is so why sould there by any more uproar.Admitted the Government and the former Governor committed one blunder after another.Former Governor should have not,as head of the Board, asked for diversion of 800 kanals of land.He had done it without having envisaged what will be the reaction from the reactionaries in Kashmir. The Government should not have diverted land to the Board. It had done so and later it should not have revoked the order. So the bluder has been committed.
Frequent and prolonged Bandhs, which is immediately greeted with the imposition of curfew restrictions, create added problem not only for the people but for pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishnov Devi and Amarnath.Traders and transporters suffer losses..Leaders should realise that the centre has been willing to pay compensation for losses suffered by traders, transporters, hoteliers and houseboat owners in the Kashmir valley. but such help has not been coming to transporters and hoteliers in Jammu if they suffer losses on account of turmoils and bandhs.
Now political leaders in Jammu should not emulate Kashmiri separatists and valley centric political leaders by calling for total shutdown in Jammu as it would enrage people. At present these political leaders have received full support from people but it is time they should not fritter away this support.Let the tension be defused so that not many lives are lost. The level of anger has been registered with full public response. But now enough is enough.
