| Rs 2 lakhs for Kuldip’s family | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 25
While an action against those who desecrated the body of martyr is yet to be initiated, the local administration today announced relief for the family of Kuldip Kumar Verma who offered his life for the cause of Shri Amarnath Shrine land. The administration announced Rs two lakh as monetary assistance to the next kin of Kuldip Kumar. "We have given Rs 2 lakh financial help to his (Dogra) kins on humanitarian grounds," Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Mandeep Bandari said. Dogra, who was taking part in a hunger strike against revocation of forest land transferred to Amarnath Shrine Board, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison after reading a religious poem at Parade ground on July 23. His death triggered violent protests resulting in protesters damaging vehicles, attacking police station, ransacking hospital and burning effigies and tyre besides tear gas shelling, cane charge and firing in the air in which 27 persons including 12 cops were injured yesterday. Meanwhile, the BJP today said leaders spearheading an agitation against revocation of land transfer to Sri Amarnath Shrine Board were ready to hold talks with Governor N N Vohra, if he clarifies the government's stand on the issue. "The governor should clarify stand on the issue. Vohra has been making accusations that leaders of the current movement in Jammu were not coming forward for talks," a BJP spokesman told reporters here. He said party leaders were scheduled to meet governor on June 30 to discuss the land transfer issue. But, Vohra had written to the then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad informing SASB's decision to withdraw request for forest land diversion. The BJP leader accused the administration of failing to ensure uninterrupted power supply in Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch districts. |
