| Jammu Peace Forum appeals for peace | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 27 In a meeting of civil society members, facilitated by Jammu Peace Forum and centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation, held in Jammu, in regard to the present crises, the large scale violence from all quarters was unanimously condemned. The members issued an appeal to maintain communal harmony and peace. A two minute silence was also observed in the memory of Kuldeep Dogra and the victims of the Bangalore and the Ahemdabad blast. In a resolution drafted by the group emphasis was laid on the need to break the deadlock between the administration and the protesting groups. Concerned over the situation, the civil society recommended that the Governor should formally invite the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangrash Samiti for immediate dialogue. The members also appealed to the Samiti to come forward for talks to restore normalcy in Jammu. It was also decided that the Governor should convene an All Party meet over the Amarnath land issue, which has polarised the state on regional lines. They also urged the administration to also involve social organisations and eminent citizens to resolve the issue. The members unanimously agreed that the police officer involved in the alleged mishandling of Kuldeep Dogra’s last rites should be immediately shifted till the pending inquiry. Also, it was suggested that mohalla or ward committees, should be revived to start an interface between the police and the public. As a long term process the group recommended that an inter-regional goodwill conference should be organised to bridge gaps between regions of the state. The meeting was organised by Sushobha Barve, Director the Centre of Dialogue and Reconciliation and Jammu Peace Forum. It was attended by prominent citizens from Jammu, Poonch and Rajouri. The group comprised of educationists, media-persons traders, business community members and research scholars. |
