| Romesh inspects flood situation | | |
JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 07 - Minister of State for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Dr. Romesh Sharma today visited several villages of border belts in Makwal camp about 18 kilometre from here. The villages visited include Haripur, Sardhara Check, Sampuranpur Kulian, Mukhda, Sumb, Lacchamanpur, Khandwal, Lalyal, Nandyal, Mangu Check and Toph Manashan Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. Vijay Abrol and other senior engineers of Irrigation and Flood Control department accompanied the Minister and take stock of the position in these flood affected areas. At village Makwal camp, Mukhda, Sampuranpur, the Minister inspected the areas that were washed away by the flash floods in Niki Tawi river. He also interacted with the villagers and asked to constantly monitor the flow of water in the river besides advising them to move to safer destinations. The Minister also inquired from the villagers about the loss to their produce owing to washing away of the fertile swathe. He apprised by the Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. Vijay Abrol about various measures being undertaken by the department for their safety. The Minister directed the concerned authorities to provide all basic amenities to the affected villagers of Makwal camp and its adjoining areas as they were most affected by the flood which badly damaged their belongings and vital necessaries required for sustenance. Instructing Flood Control department authorities for erection of crates along the Niki Tawi, lest the water seeps inside the low lying areas of the river, the Minister said that the task must be accomplished on a war-footing pattern. He said that a proposal of Rs. 27 crore is already being sent to Centre for sanction. He said that the State and Centre governments are fully aware with problems of border belts people those who are affected with recent incessant rains. On the way side, a large number of deputations met the Minister and apprised the problems being faced by them due to flood in Niki Tawi. The Minister directed the accompanied engineers to immediately start the construction work of crates along the Niki Tawi river for the safety of the people and their properties. He also issued instructions to remain present in their headquarters and complete the repair and renovation of crates within week time.
