After days of violent protests and demonstrations and continuous shut down, the Governor NN Vohra has swung into action ordering a judicial probe into the alleged incident of desecration of martyr Kuldeep Kumar’s body. The Governor also removed Alok Kumar from the post of Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu and ordered attachment of SP incharge Bishnah. Though there was neither any allegation against nor any demand for removal of Kumar, but sources said the SSP Jammu has been removed while holding him responsible as district Police chief for the Police action on Kuldip Kumar’s body An official spokesman said that the Governor has announced a judicial probe into the cremation of the mortal remains of Kuldeep Kumar Verma, at Bishnah, in the wee hours of July 24, allegedly without respecting the religious sanctity of the occasion. The Governor has taken note of the conflicting versions of the Police and the relatives of the deceased and the strong public sentiments on this issue and decided to ascertain the truth through a judicial probe. This inquiry shall be conducted under the Commission of Enquiries Act by Justice O P Sharma, Retired Judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, and the report submitted within three months. The spokesman said that the Governor has also ordered transfer of Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Alok Kumar. He also directed that the concerned Superintendent of Police, Incharge Bishnah area, be also attached forthwith, pending the judicial inquiry. Vohra has also directed the Principal Secretary, Home, Mr Anil Goswami, and Director General of Police, Mr Kudeep Khuda, to camp in Jammu to oversee the overall situation and take steps to create an environment congenial for the restoration of normalcy. However, ahead of Governor’s announcement to hold the Judicial inquiry, the District Magistrate Jammu had already initiated the process of a Magisterial inquiry following orders of Divisional Commissioner Jammu. a communiqué in this connection said that the District Magistrate Jammu has to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the allegations of the public that the dead body of the deceased Kuldeep Raj Verma who was forcibly taken to his native town Bishnah by the personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police for cremation in wee hours of July 24, 2008, as the police had already prepared the pyre and forcibly tried to consign the dead body to flames by sprinkling petrol, alcohol and also put tyres on pyre against the Hindu rites and customs. “Whereas in order to ascertain the factual position in this matter, it is necessary that all the persons who are aware of the factual facts in the matter are provided the opportunity to produce necessary evidence available with them in order to substantiate the said allegations”, said the communiqué. The communiqué added that the DM has appealed the general public that anyone who has any documentary evidence available with him/her can personally appear before him from 9 AM to 5 PM, to make his/her statement recorded and also can produce any evidence he or she has, within a period of five days. Meanwhile, a Police Spokesman has category denied that one Manish Singh of Janipur has attempted to commit suicide in connection with current Jammu agitation as claimed by a local Hindi daily Dainik Jagran issue of July 27, 2008. The spokesman said that report is totally mischievous aiming at inciting the sentiments of the people. The father of Mr Manish Singh has already disclosed that Mr Manish had taken some anti-mosquito solution unintentionally during darkness taking it as his medicine. The spokesman regretted attempt of the paper to provoke sentiments of the people. |
