Jammu | July 28
First time ever since its formation in 1999, the Peoples Democratic Party could not celebrate its foundation day at its Jammu headquarters.
Even though the PDP office in posh Gandhi Nagar has been wearing a deserted look ever since it came under a mob attack earlier this year but the party leaders had been claiming that the foundation day ceremony will match the overwhelm of previous years. It may be mentioned here that since its formation, the PDP had been celebrating its foundation day in Jammu with pomp and show and the proceedings had always been presided over by either Mufti Mohammad Sayeed or Mehbooba Mufti.
However, this year there was no celebrations at all as only a couple of dozen of its local leaders and activists gathered at the party headquarters to have a symbolic meeting. A visiting team of EARLY TIMES found only 35 persons present at the PDP headquarters which included the office staff and security personnel. The function was presided over by senior party leader Sardar Rangil Singh. Speaking on the occasion Singh said that programmes and policies being adopted by the PDP are relevant in the prevailing circumstances. He stressed on the need of educating people about policies of the party.
Ongoing trouble in Jammu and its adjoining areas have been keeping the PDP leaders on toes as the party headquarters and its various leaders have come under public attack during this month.
PDP had also drawn out elaborate arrangements of foundation day celebrations across the region where programmes remained a low key affair. In Marh, the PDP had plans of having a massive public rally for which media too had been invited. However, sensing trouble the proposed rally was put off at the last minute and it was converted into a solemn meeting at the resident of its local leader Suram Singh. General Secretary Daman Bhasin was chief guest and Shanti Devi, former MLA attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhasin said that since its formation PDP has been propagating pro-peace agenda and it was all due to the result of the policies of the party that both India and Pakistan announced cease-fire on border. Policies and programmes of the party were endorsed at both national and international level.
Bhasin further exhorted the party workers to spread the message of party at every nook and corner of Jammu province to strengthen the party at grass root level.
A PDP spokesman said that Rajya Sabha member and senior party leader Trilok Singh Bajwa addressed an impressive function at Suchetgarh in which a large number of party workers were present. Mr Bajwa highlighted pro-people policies of the party and said that due to the policies of the party lasting peace has been prevailed on border.
Former Minister and ex-MLA Manjeet Singh, while addressing a function at Vijaypur, called upon party workers to shoulder the responsibility of strengthening brotherhood and communal harmony. Zone president Chander Slathia also addressed the function.
At Doda, a function was held under the chairmanship of Sheikh Mujeeb district president in which a large number of party workers were present. Similar function was held at Kishtwar under the chairmanship of state secretary Sayeed Asgar Ali. Mr Ali emphasized on the need of strengthening the party at grass root level to frustrate the designs of anti-peace forces.
At Poonch, senior leader Yashpal Sharma addressed a function which was organized in connection with the foundation day. District president Imtayaz Bandey was also present on the occasion.
District president Rajouri, Choudhary Zulfikar addressed the foundation day function at Kotranka while as senior leaders M S Tariq and Master Tassadiq Hussains addressed the functions at Thanamandi and Rajouri respectively.
An impressive function was held at Mendhar in which Raja Rafiq Hussain Khan and Nissar Khan addressed the gathering. At Mahore, party leader Mumtaz Kousar addressed a function in which a large number of party workers were present.
