Shut down extended by 72 hours, tension keeps in Old City, Samiti asks traders to open shops on rotation

When as the Old City areas remained an epicenter of violent protests, the Police today unleashed a reign of terror in Muthi area where people were beaten up after barging into their houses.
After four days intensified battles in the Old City areas, the presence of troops was today cut down from Parade, Kachi Chhawni, Raj Tilak Road and Pacca Danga since this morning. With fewer numbers of troops present in these areas, the intensity of clashes came down considerably.
The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti has extended the shut down call for another three days and warned of a sustained agitation if the issue was not resolved immediately. Samiti convener Advocate Leela Kiran Sharma said that the Governor was not responsive to the situation and only he is to be blamed if situation further aggravated in Jammu region.
Worst kinds of violent protests have been reported from Muthi and its adjoining areas on the Akhnoor road where protestor torched at least three vehicles. Violent protests continued in Jammu city as clashes took place between police and local residents in Muthi area where two police vehicles were burnt by angry mob and several people including police men were injured.
The situation remained tense in old city area as ding dong battles which started early in the morning continued till late evening. Protesters were dispersed by the police using coloured water canons in old city. Situation however, remained normal in areas from where curfew was lifted on Sunday evening. Reports reaching here from several other adjoining areas said that street demonstrations continued at several places in samba,Kathua,RS Pura,Udhampur,Reasi,Vijaypur.
Addressing a press conference after two hour long meeting convener of the Amarnath yatra sangarsh samti Leela Karan Sharma announced constituents of the sangarsh samiti decided to extend the Jammu bandh further for three more days till July 31 to propel the ongoing agitation.
The sangarsh samiti leaders also announced that All J&K petrol tankers owners association has decided to block supplies of petrol and diesel to Kashmir valley till July 31.A decision to organise a tribute ceremony on August 2 in Bisnah was also taken during the meeting, Sharma said.
Condemning the brutal use of police force on agitators who wished to pay homage to Kuldeep Verma on sunday Sharma said that the sangarsh samiti would not settle untill judicial probe by a sitting High court judge was ordered and Amarnath forest land was restored to the shrine board.
Refering to hardships faced by the common people Sharma said that traders association has been requested to allow shopkeepers in different areas to open their shops in rotation to allow people to buy essential grocery items. He said hoteliers association has also announced free food and refreshment facilities for pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno devi, Amarnath and Baba Buda Amarnath. The association has assured that rooms will be made available to pilgrims at nominal rates.
Meanwhile, National Highway IA being the only major road line of the state with rest of country and Kathua district being the ‘Gateway’ to state. District Magistrate Kathua Mandeep Kaur in exercise of powers vested upon her under Section 144 of Cr PC have ordered that no protest/demonstration/procession resulting in a blockage shall be held carried out on the National Highway IA falling within the jurisdiction of district Kathua and in the municipal limits of Lakhanpur and Kathua. This order shall remain in force till rescinded.
The order follows report from SSP Kathua that people of Hatli Morh, Lakhanpur and surrounding areas of Kathua town have been creating blockage of the National Highway IA with an intention to damage the public property creating a serious law and order problem in the Kathua town including areas from Kali Bari, Hatli Morh to Lakhanpur.
However, this order shall not apply to the uniform personnel’s performing law and order duties, to the employees of the essential services departments like PDD, PHE, Health and also funeral processions.
