| We are sincere on Aug 15 deadline: PDD | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 29
The Government today sought to reassure that it still sticks to its deadline of August 15 to restore the electricity supply to Jammu and adjoining areas to near normal level. Amidst the present tension in Jammu there have been sharp attacks on installation of the Power Development Department in Jammu as people gave vent to their ire against non-availability of electricity. More than 1000 electric meter have already been smashed in the Old City areas while a store of PDD had also been attacked. To settle the public passion that PDD today said that the parts of transformer for replace at Gladni Station are on way from Patna and will start reaching Jammu by August 4. The Spokesperson of Power Development Department said that 150 MVA transformer of power grid being brought from Patna to Jammu could have been airlifted or transported by rail to save time has clarified that heavy loads containing sensitive parts and requiring upright positioning are different from heavy and rugged mobile units such as a military tank which are airlifted in emergencies. The 150-MVA transformer coming from Patna is being carried in semi knocked down condition in three large trailers and five trucks. For airlifting are transporting the transformer by rail, it was informed that loading and unloading the transformer would require erection of special structures at Patna/Jammu airports and at Patna/Jammu railway stations after getting clearances from Indian Railways, India Air Force, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Power as the case may be. Obtaining these clearances would have taken more time than the estimated transport time by road through trailers. The spokesperson said that for ensuring safe delivery of sensitive components of the transformer, a meeting of top engineers of PDD with top executives of Power Grid at their Gurgaon headquarters was convened where it was decided that the transformer should be transported by a tested and reliable mode which is through trailers on road. Moreover, transportation by air/rail would involve four more operations which means more time. The spokesperson once again clarified that 150 MVA transformer which could nearly meet 90 percent of the power requirement of Jammu city would reach Jammu by August 4-5, 2008 as already planned. The department would do every effort to expedite the commissioning of the said transformer. This is extra ordinary operation which would be carried out in the shortest possible time, he informed. |
