Jammu | July 29

While the state government in consultation is reportedly working on a comprise formula to end the present deadlock in Jammu, the leaders spearheading the agitation are planning to extend the movement indefinitely in view of massing public support.
However, at the same time the government has apprehensions that despite a ‘win-win’ formula, the situation may not immediately return to normal in Jammu. Therefore, the government is making all arrangements of handing situation keeping in mind that what is currently prevailing may continue for an indefinite time.
Highly placed sources EARLY TIMES that during his recent visit to New Delhi last weekend, the Governor NN Vohra briefed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Prime Minister’s Office on the prevailing situation in Jammu. The Governor, it is learnt, has told the Central Government that the situation in Jammu was too precarious too be handled without restoring the controversial land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board. At the same time he is also learnt to have told the Central Government that returning to the status quo ante will certainly trigger a violent situation in the Valley.
Sources preferring anonymity told the EARLY TIMES from Srinagar that a team of the Central Government, mostly comprising top officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs, was all set to visit Jammu for making a situation assessment but the serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad derailed the conflict resolution process. The team is likely to be in Jammu in next two days, said the sources.
Refusing to divulge details, the sources confirmed that a compromise plan has been worked out by the government and the same may be put before the Samiti after Central Government team makes situation assessment in Jammu. Sources said that the plan being discussed at the government level seeks to assuage sentiments of both communities and both regions. When asked that it is all about the use of the land and how government plans to satisfy both opinions, the source pointed out this involves the art of negotiations.
Meanwhile, amidst the reports of compromise formula, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti is gathering huge public support for continuation of agitation. When two top Government officers contacted the Samiti convener Advocate Leela Kiran Sharma he said that things were no more in his hands as now it has become a mass movement.
Many well meaning people of the town are reportedly calling on Leela Kiran with requests that the present agitation represents the discriminated sentiments of Jammu and therefore it should not be withdrawn at any cost. Efforts are also being actively made to keep the political interests of different parties away from the agitation. “Police interests may lead to a clash between different parties and eventually fizzle out the agitation”, said a Samiti leader. He said that the position is being reviewed every day to check politicization of the agitation or any particular political party cashing in on the situation.
The Samiti is overwhelmed with the continuous support it is getting from the business communities. The Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Ram Sahai today said that though the business community is suffering a daily loss of Rs 200 to 250 Crores but it is ready to make any sacrifice for the cause.
Though being confident of its compromise formula, the government is still not very sure of ending the deadlock. Therefore all arrangement for maintaining the law and order are being made keeping in view that prevailing situation may continue for another ten days to one month.
