| BSNL fails to make dent in J&K; poor services force subscribers to switch over | | | Rohit Gupta

Bakwas Service Nalaik Log this is how subscribers in J&K have started describing the services of BSNL services and its ‘inefficient’ staff in the State.
BSNL launched its service at least two years prior to any of its competitor. But today Airtel has managed to overtake BSNL in terms of subscribers and claims to be No.1 service provider in J&K State.
BSNL humiliated the people of J&K State by making them stand for 6-7 hours in front of their office counter for issuing SIM cards. Where as, in the rest of the country, through advertisements they almost beg people to buy their SIM cards. Worst was the day when they allotted Vanity or VIP numbers. There was nobody to ask the aspirants to make a queue and no police arrangement. The anti social elements had a field day as they blocked the main gate of the Rani Talab Telephone Exchange office and were amongst the first few to take vanity numbers for themselves or for the one who had hired them. For rest of the aspirants, it was a chaos.
Almost all the BSNL subscribers, for whom mobile phone is indispensable, carry two mobile phones, one with BSNL SIM card and other one with the SIM card of other service provider. This is because earlier, as there was no other service provider; everybody had no other choice but to take BSNL SIM card. As the other service providers entered J&K and BSNL service started going from bad to worse, BSNL subscribers purchased SIM cards of other service providers to make calls as it is next to impossible to make a call from BSNL SIM card. To carry BSNL SIM card is a compulsion as mobile number circulated among the friends or business or official circles is that of BSNL as it was the first service provider in the State.
It is next to impossible to call somebody from BSNL sim during the peak hours, either the message displayed on the instrument will be connection error or the message heard in creek voice will be "The network is busy, please call after some time" or "This channel is busy, and please call after some time". The audio quality is very poor and one conversation will take at least 5-6 dial-ups as call automatically drops after 50 secs to 1.5 minute. It is almost next to impossible to talk to somebody from BSNL sim card continuously for 10 mins without call dropping. Many a times speech is one way only.
The other interesting feature of BSNL is that in between a conversation of two BSNL sim cards, you can be connected to any other caller from BSNL sim card or at times, you can listen to conversation between two BSNL sim card callers for good about a minute or so. On top of all, due to some software problem, inflated bills are being raised to the consumers who hardly get to use this defunct service.
Almost all BSNL sim card holders are waiting for the day when TRAI will implement "Number Portability" system, which means that anybody can switch over to any Mob service provider with his Mob Number allotted previously by any service provider. Thereafter, there will be a mass exodus of BSNL sim card holders to other Mob service providers.
Many heads will roll if Union Government conducts CBI inquiry to find as to how BSNL, which was the first Mob service provider in J&K State and was without any competition for good about two years have gone from bad to worse and who are the officials involved in the deterioration of its services. Inquiry should also be conducted to establish whether some officials have deliberately deteriorated the services to facilitate the other service providers to overtake BSNL for their personal gains. |
