As if Kuldeep Kumar Verma’s martyrdom was not enough to force the government for reconsidering its decision hurting sentiments of Hindus, yet another youth today offered his life’s sacrifice on Shri Amarnath Shrine land issue. Kuljeet Singh Choudhary, in his 20s, consumed poison while on a sit-in to protest the revocation of the land allocation order in Samba. Choudhary was rushed to a hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical. He has been put on ventilator. News of his suicide bid has further incited the passion but the local administration is tightlipped on the issue. The news of the attempted suicide brought the people onto the Jammu-Pathankote Highway. They threw stones at the police and fought pitched battles with them, sources here said. Meanwhile, tension continued to prevail in Jammu and its adjoining areas on seventh day of the fresh protests and demonstrations even the administration completely lifted the curfew and also thinned down presence of troops from tense areas. Though there was no ebbing in the situation but intensity of protests today considerably declined in the Old City areas of Parada, Purani Mandi, Pacca Danga and Raj Tilak Road. Meanwhile, the mob today resorted to attack on a mosque in Subhash Nagar where additional Police was deployed to ward off tension. A group of youth numbering more than 50 attacked the mosque in Subhash Nagar. They pelted stones and smashed window panes. The Maulvi of the mosque made a distress call to the Administrator Auqaf who ignored the call saying that he was not be able to hear. The matter was later brought to the notice of Police which deployment of cops around the mosque. The mob also smashed the window panes of official vehicle of Sub-District Magistrate (SDM) Samba Abdul Hafeez at Residency Road this afternoon. "The ding-dong battle between police and protestors continued at Parade and Purani Mandi till late evening here," said reports. Sources informed that the district administration has lifted curfew from the entire city, adding that no part of the Jammu zone is under restrictions now. Reports said that massive protest rallies were taken out at several places like Satwari, Nai Basti, Narwal, Muthi, City Chowk and Gandhi Nagar where protestors shouted slogans and burnt the effigies of Governor N N Vohra, PDP and separatist leaders. "Over 4000 thousand people took out a protest rally and shouted slogans against Governor N N Vohra at R S Pura town. They demanded that the transferred land should be handed over back to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB)," reports added. In the evening protest demonstrations were held at various places against government and effigies of Governor, NC president and Separatist leaders were burnt at Narwal Bala, Satwari and KC Chowk. In Poni check a torch procession was taken out in the evening chanting slogans against government and National Conference. Reports from Kathua, Samba, Udhampur and Reasi districts said that normal life was crippled on the seventh consecutive day of bandh. All shops and commercial establishments remained closed while no commercial vehicle plied on road. Meanwhile, the All Jammu Kashmir Petrol Tanker Owners Association today suspended the supply of petrol, diesel and Kerosene to Kashmir Valley and all parts of Jammu province for next three days demanding diverted forest land should be handed over back to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, president of the Association Anan Sharma also gave an ultimatum of one-week to Governor to cancel the revoked land transfer order failing which the supply of essential services like petrol would be suspended for indefinite period. Flanked by general secretary of All Jammu and Kashmir Drivers and Cleaners Association Devinder Singh, Sharma alleged that over 80 tanker drivers were beaten-up by miscreants at different places and government has turned blind eye towards the problems being faced by the people for the last one month. "No tanker would be loaded or unloaded upto July 31 and if the demand of cancellation of revoked land transfer order was not acceded within one week time, we will suspend the supply of petrol and diesel from petrol pumps across the state," he warned. Devinder Singh said, "The suppressing attitude being adopted by the administration would yield no result and Governor should come forward and invite Samiti members for dialogue so that an amicable solution of this problem is come out." Meanwhile, Samiti has appealed to government employees to observe mass causal leave in support of the ongoing agitation over land transfer row. "We appeal to the government employees to observe mass casual leave and join ongoing agitation. We also invite police cops to join agitation by putting off their uniform aside," Samiti Spokesperson Tilak Raj Sharma told media persons here this afternoon. |
