| Shutdown extended by three days | | …may culminate only on statehood | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 30
Overwhelmed by across the board massive public support, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti has extended the shut down and agitation call by a period of another three days signaling that the discriminated sentiments in Jammu is fully consolidated to fight the battle of its rights. The Samiti’s decision to extend shut down and the massive public support to the agitation is a clear reflected that Jammu stands united to fight for its rights. Different organizations, groups and individuals have been asserting that the present agitation is not only an expression of anger against the hurt of Hindu sentiments but also a movement against the discrimination meted out against Jammu region for past 50 years. From all sections of society, a dominant voice is now emerging for the separate statehood for Jammu –a struggle launched several times in the past. Even though the Samiti is yet to discuss or take stand on any such issue but the majority public sentiment says that this is the right and opportune time to make the voices of Jammu heard. “New Delhi has always followed a Kashmiri appeasing policy and people of Jammu have been made to play a second fiddle”, said Yog Raj, a protester under the banner of Sangharsh Samiti. He pointed out, “though entire Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India but separate statehood for Jammu can empower the region and end discriminations of 50 years”. This is not a voice in isolation. Statements pouring in from different sections of society say that the leadership of Jammu should get united and assert for the separate statehood. The activists are saying that a sentiment for separate statehood for Jammu has always existed but never before Jammu was fully united. “This is the time, when all hearts are beating with same rhythm and people should assert for their political identity and rights”, said Naresh another activist. He said the restoration of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board is one issue on which there is no question of compromise but the leadership should take this agitation forward to fulfill aspirations of Jammu region. Representatives of different areas, particularly trade and industry have always favoured continuation of the agitation. President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ram Sahai said that the present agitation is an expression of anger accumulating for last 50 years and the agitation should continue till a logical conclusion is arrived at. The President of Bari Barhmna Industrial Association, Annil Suri has also asserted that industrialists are fully behind the Samiti and the agitation should continue in any case. |
