Despite repeated strict warnings from Indian leadership, the Pakistani forces today once again violation ceasefire agreement as firing from other side has been reported in Nowgam sector of Kashmir.
The Pakistani forces opened fresh unprovoked firing at Indian positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in northern Kashmir, a day after army commanders of the two sides met to ease tension following a 16-hour exchange of fire in which an Indian soldier was killed.
Army spokesman Col S D Goswami said in Jammu that Pakistani troops fired at the Indian post in Naria in Nowgam sector on Wednesday morning, violating the ceasefire along the LoC.
They fired two mortar shells and light machine guns, but the Indian side maintained restraint and did not retaliate. There were no report about any causality.
Messages at the level of company commander were conveyed to the Pakistani Army to stop firing immediately, he said.
India had on Tuesday said there have been ceasefire violations several times by Pakistani troops along the LoC and asked Islamabad not to vitiate the atmosphere and disturb the peace process between the two countries.
Defence Minister A K Antony had said that 19 ceasefire violations were committed by Pakistan army since January this year. The border stretch across the high mountain ranges in Baramulla district was a scene of heavy exchange fire for over 16 hours, which had started on Monday. A jawan of 22 Rajput Regiment was killed in the firing.
Meanwhile, Pakistan today dismissed India's assertion about a fresh incident of firing by its troops across the Line of Control in Northern Kashmir, claiming that there had been a "lull" throughout the day. "According to our reports there has been no firing incident or exchange of fire today," Pakistan's military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told a told a news agency.
"There has been no report of any incident from any part of the LoC," he said. His remarks follow Indian army's assertion that six 82 mm mortar shells were fired at the BSF positions in two bursts in a span of one hour from 1130 hrs this morning in Nowgam sector of Baramulla district.
The Pakistani military spokesman said he particularly checked with the local commanders and found that "there was no firing from our side." "There has been a lull throughout the day," Abbas said.
India had yesterday also conveyed its concerns over several instances of cross-border firing by Pakistani troops along the 742 km LoC.
