Congress needs change its stance towards present agitation
7/31/2008 11:45:17 PM
The growing popularity of the ongoing agitation in Jammu, with more and more people getting involved in it and the same assuming the character of a mass movement, has awakened the Congress leaders in Jammu from their deep slumber and has forced them to give up the ostrich like attitude. Realizing that the ground is slipping from under their feet, with people of Jammu who had voted for them in the last assembly elections, losing faith in them and their growing alienation from the party, Congress leaders from Jammu, who gathered in a meeting yesterday gave enough indication of their change of attitude and assessment about the present volatile situation in Jammu and a realization having dawn on them that their remaining aloof and indifferent towards the agitation, dubbing it as the handiwork of some communally minded partiers and leaders of Jammu, will only prove counterproductive for them, have long last shown sympathy towards the agitating people of Jammu and have appealed for a via media to be found to resolve the crises and end the deadlock. While over a score of top Congress leaders of Jammu who held a meeting yesterday appealed to the Governor N N Vohra to take initiative and effective steps to resolve the deadlock and negotiate with the leaders of the agitation as well as take into confidence representatives of various shades of opinion in Jammu, over the issue, the party MP from Jammu---Poonch constituency, Madan Lal Sharma was more candid and forthright in describing the present mass agitation in Jammu as an outlet of pent up emotions of the people of Jammu over their cumulative unrest over their continuous discrimination and neglect at the hands of Kashmiri centric political dispensations. The Congress leaders from Jammu, who in the past had been invariably standing for the rights of the people of Jammu region and identifying themselves with their regional aspirations and urges, had unfortunately chosen to remain reticent and not come forward on the sides of aggrieved Jammu people. Whether it was the case of denial of rights to the permanent state resident females, who marry a non state subject boy, to retain their permanent state resident status or it was the issue of extending the period of Amarnath yatra to two months, the Congress leaders from Jammu had stood on the side of Jammu people, identifying themselves with their aspirations and even taking cogules with their coalition partner, the PDP. But in the present case of Amarnath yatra land row, since it was the Congress Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is alleged to have bungled in the matter and created ground for surrender before the secessionists and religious fundamentalists in Kashmir, the Congress leaders from Jammu were feeling constrained in coming out openly in support of the aspirations of the Jammu people in this regard and take a positive attitude towards the ongoing agitation. But the circumstances and resolve by the people of Jammu at large to take the fight to its logical conclusion and support extended to the agitation by all sections of the people, allover Jammu region, has forced the Congress leaders of Jammu to take fresh look on the whole issue and revise their earlier negative or indifferent attitude towards the same. However, even now indulging in blame game by condemning some sections of leadership involved in the agitation for exploiting the same towards their political end, the Congress will be well advised to become a part of the movement, both to deny any particular political party to make political mileage out of it and not let the movement to be the monopoly of any single or few parties.
