Jammu | Aug 1

The Governor N N Vohra has failed to emotionally blackmail the agitating people of Jammu by trying to touch their tender chord, appealing them in the name of national interest in J&K to call off the present agitation going on in Jammu for last over one month over the issue of land allotment to SASB.
Mr. Vohra, who had no concrete proposal to offer to the delegation of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti, which met him yesterday on the invitation of the former, to resolve the deadlock, only tried to strike a chord with them by invoking the interest of Indian nationalism in J&K, calling upon them to give up the agitational approach. The only face saving he offered to the samiti leaders was that a committee would be formed to examine the documents relating to the role and functioning of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board but he was not ready to concede the demand for cancellation of the government order revoking the earlier order of allotting some land to SASB for creating facilities for Amarnath pilgrims, citing that any counter reaction in Kashmir of the same will only weaken Indian cause in J&K, it is learnt from the sources who were on board about the parleys held between the Governor and the Sangarsh Samiti delegation last evening.
While members of samiti delegation comprising Tilak Raj Sharma, D K Khajuria, Brig. (Rtd) Suchet Singh and Narayan Singh were categorical that nothing short of re-allotment of the land in question to the SASB and total non interference of the government in the religious pilgrimage of Hindus will be acceptable to them, N N Vohra was vague and took refuge under sentimentalizing and taking the same old plea all through taken by the central ruling dispensations and the bureaucracy, appealing the people of Jammu to bear with injustices and neglect in the interest of Indian nationalism in Jammu and Kashmir and not do anything which can lead to further alienation of Kashmiris from the Indian main stream.
The Samiti leaders however told Mr. Vohra that the days of taking Jammu people for granted, in the name of Indian nationalism are over. Mr. Vohra's sentimental approach to praise Jammu people for upholding the banner of Indian nationalism in J&K and showering all praise on them for serving as a bridge between the state and the rest of the country, failed to have any impact on the delegation, who are reported to have categorically told Vohra that Jammu people can no more be taken in by these old tactic, making them scapegoats at the altar of appeasing the secessionists and religious fundamentalists in Kashmir who are getting emboldened by the policy of perpetual appeasement of Kashmiri separatists at the cost of the nationalist aspirations and urges of Jammu people.
Mr. Vohra is also reported to have tried to establish a personal chord with the BJP elements in the agitation, by invoking Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the BJP lead NDA government first reposing faith in him by appointing him as centre's interlocutor in Jammu and Kashmir. He was categorically told that the present agitation is not of any single political party, but belongs to all sections of people of Jammu, irrespective of their political affiliation.
In the meanwhile the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is also reported to have failed to convince BJP leader and NDA's Prime Minister in waiting L K Advani, to use his good offices for withdrawal of agitation in Jammu, Mr. Advani is reported to have plainly told the Prime Minister that the agitation going on presently in Jammu is not launched by the BJP and the same has the involvement of broad mass of Jammu, while BJP is only one of the parties supporting the agitation. He is also reported to have told the Prime Minister that any decision with regard to the Jammu agitation is to be taken by the people of Jammu through their representatives spearheading the same and the Prime Minister or the Union government should instead hold parleys with them.
